The 2016 election is over and Donald Trump is president, so why is Hillary Clinton still making public appearances and talking to crowds?
Or, as Ruth Mandel director of Rutgers Eagleton Institute of Politics, put it to Clinton Thursday at Rutgers in Piscataway, why still talk when "People say get off the stage and shut up"?
The former secretary of state's response was direct:
"They never said that to any man who was not elected."

Email from Hillary Clinton: Side by Side

This past weekend, I traveled to Rochester, New York to pay tribute to the life of the great Representative Louise Slaughter, and watched as young activists showed us that the future leaders of the progressive movement are smart, diverse, and not waiting for an invitation to get up and make their voices heard.
I found myself thinking about the ways in which activism and public service can make life richer. After all, there's no better way to meet people who are passionate about your passions than by fighting, side by side, for what's right.
I'm so grateful to be able to share these fights with you, and to have you as part of the Onward Together family. Today, I hope you'll take a moment to learn a little more about Collective PAC, another one of the groups that we're working with, in their fight to find and elect more African-American legislators and make our democracy a little more equal.
Onward!
Hillary

Onward Together works to build a brighter future for generations to come by supporting groups that encourage people to organize in their communities or run for office. Because you're an important part of Onward Together, we wanted you to get a chance to know these groups a little bit better. To learn more about Onward Together, click here.
The organization: Collective PAC
The organizers: Quentin James and Stefanie Brown James, former key strategists and organizers for the Sierra Club, NAACP, and Obama for America campaigns.
The mission: To fix the underrepresentation of African Americans in elected office by working to find, support, fund and elect African-American candidates.
The story: Collective PAC was created in 2016, when two politicos set out to close the gap in representation for African American constituents. In less than two years, they've helped 23 candidates win at the local, state and federal level, raised nearly $1,000,000, and launched The Black Campaign School and The Black Political Power Summit.
The latest: With the primary season underway, Collective PAC has swung into action, with 38 endorsed candidates on the ballot this year at statewide, federal, and municipal levels. They're also focused on building the power of black voters and donors through training and support programs.
The next step: Head to collectivepac.org to join the fight for equal representation and get involved in 2018 efforts today.

DEMOCRACY!

I used to teach at Morristown H.S. ! trending on Twitter!

Today is THE DAY! Teach Your Parents Well!

Organized entirely by students, today is the March for Our Lives.  You can still join one of the 810 scheduled marches.

https://marchforourlives.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/banner-quote1.png?w=2000&h=1090&crop=1
I heard one of the Parkland kids say, "This is not a red or blue issue. It is a red, white, and blue issue."

Adults will not be the speakers today. This is the day for the kids to speak out and for all of the rest of us to learn from them. All speakers will be students.

The Washington D.C. march looks to exceed the attendance at the 2017 inauguration.  Not that this is a competition.

It is, however, democracy in action. Maybe we did teach our children well.

Kids, teach your parents well!

We are so proud of you!

Hillary Clinton Joins Democratic Luminaries Eulogizing Louise Slaughter

Louise Slaughter remembered as trailblazer during funeral

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-California) began by noting that two plane loads of Congress members and staff came to Rochester for the funeral. Pool video

Whether she was walking the halls of Congress, fighting for legislation to protect victims of domestic violence or genetic discrimination, blazing new trails for women in power or cooking up a slab of country ham before seeing her grandson off after a visit, there was truly only one Louise M. Slaughter.
In a moving funeral service on Friday for Rep. Slaughter, she was described by dignitaries and family alike as warm, funny, tenacious, committed and full of joy.

More than 2,000 people, including dozens of congresspeople, members of the state Legislature, local officials and former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, filled the Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre on Friday to say goodbye to Rep. Slaughter, who died March 16 at the age of 88.

"Even her opponents couldn't help liking and respecting her,” Clinton said. "We gather here for an extraordinary outpouring of love."
Clinton spoke of Slaughter's sense of humor and personal warmth, and the way she used those skills to help get things done in Congress without alienating her opponents.
"It's hard because what she represented, who she was, not only should be remembered by all who knew her and all who she served with and for, but because we need more Louise Slaughters, today more than ever."]

It’s the afternoon of Wednesday, Nov. 9. We are at the New Yorker Hotel and Hillary has just finished her concession speech. I decide to just nod and smile wistfully when supporters and reporters, men and women alike, laud Hillary’s concession speech. “Where was ‘this Hillary’ during the campaign?” they would lament. “Why didn’t we see this side of her when it mattered?”
Yes, I am sure you loved her concession speech, I thought to myself. Because that’s what you think is acceptable for a woman to do — concede.

Email from Hillary Clinton: This is not your every day march

Like many Americans, I felt immeasurable grief after the mass shooting in Parkland, Florida last month. Gun violence touches every corner of this country, and making our communities safer should be our number one priority. And on March 24th, at more than 800 March for Our Lives events, young people will lead us in standing up for exactly that.
March for Our Lives is bringing hundreds of thousands of Americans together to demand that our elected officials prioritize the lives of our students and our communities. They're marching because young people should be worrying about homework, not whether they're safe at school. I'm inspired by the students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School who will be marching for all of our lives on March 24th — and I'm inspired by everyone who has stepped up to join them.
So I'm asking: Will you join a March for Our Lives event near you?
I have always believed in our power to make change if we come together and demand it. I hope you've been as inspired by these students as I have — now, more than ever, is the time to speak out.
Thank you,
Hillary

On the Passing of Louise Slaughter

Mar 16
2018
New York, NY
Statement
We loved and admired Louise Slaughter. She was a force to be reckoned with on Capitol Hill—skilled and smart, funny and fierce. For more than 30 years, she worked to bring the people of Western New York new economic opportunities. She was also one of the most effective advocates for health care reform, a respected voice for science, and one of our most important champions for women’s rights, including her co-authorship of the Violence Against Women Act. Her leadership and her wonderful laugh will be missed, but her legacy will live on in the young people she inspired to do public service and the countless Americans whose lives are better and healthier because of her remarkable career. We are grateful to have been her friends.

Email from Hillary Clinton: Our most fundamental right

Election season is exciting, and it's also a time to take stock of where we are as a nation. Are we paying attention? Are we coming out to participate in primaries and local elections? And are we making sure that our most fundamental right is accessible to every eligible voter?
This week, I've been traveling abroad, talking to people about how our countries have grown and changed over the last few years. I was so proud to be able to share with folks here that Conor Lamb won his race on Tuesday, thanks to the hard work of organizers and volunteers in the 18th district of Pennsylvania who made their voices heard.
But in Pennsylvania and across the country, access to the ballot box is obstructed by one unnecessary measure or another. Working to ensure that the right to vote is protected is one of the most critical issues of our time -- and that's why I'm so grateful to the team at iVote, another one of our Onward Together partners, for the work that they do.
Take a moment to learn more about iVote below, then recommit to vote in your next local election. It couldn't be more important.
Onward!
Hillary

Onward Together works to build a brighter future for generations to come by supporting groups that encourage people to organize in their communities or run for office. Because you're an important part of Onward Together, we wanted you to get a chance to know these groups a little bit better. To learn more about Onward Together, click here.
The organization: iVote
The organizers: Campaign veterans Ellen Kurz and Jeremy Bird
The mission: To secure voting rights for all Americans by investing in campaigns to bring universal, automatic voter registration to multiple states and by electing voting rights champions to be the chief election administrator in the office of the Secretary of State in battleground states.
The story: Founded in 2014, iVote went on the offensive by working to elect pro-voting Secretaries of State in key battleground states. Whereas voting rights groups have relied on challenges in court after rights had been impinged, or defeating efforts to further erode rights, iVote takes a different tack - 'flipping the script' from playing defense on voter suppression efforts to going on offense.
The latest: In 2016, iVote ran a petition campaign in Nevada to put automatic voter registration on the ballot. After being successfully certified, iVote is now focused on working with partners to win the ballot initiative in November '18. iVote is also working to advance several pieces of legislation that would put automatic voter registration on the ballot in more states. Earlier this year, iVote announced that they plan to spend $5 million in efforts to elect Democratic, pro-voting rights secretaries of state in seven target states of Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, Michigan, Ohio, New Mexico, and Iowa.
The next step: Head to ivoteforamerica.org to learn more and get involved ahead of the next primaries, then check out their new video on why fighting back against voter suppression is so important.

From Hillary Clinton (and me) to Students

This is from me to the students, personally.
No one has the right to curtail your right to protest, not your teachers, school administrators, or even your parents.

As a new high school English teacher in the late 1960s I sat in the cafeteria while the students at Morristown HS (NJ) walked out to protest the war in Viet Nam. We had been told we would be fired if we walked out with them. Most of us agreed with the students. If I had walked out and been fired, I probably would have been beaten to a pulp by my then-husband who collected my paycheck every pay day.
I learned three things in those years.
1.  American students, even the very young, are very aware of current events.
2. High school students, on the cusp of adulthood, are in dangerous territory. They can die for their country soon enough  - or die in school as it happens these days. We should listen to what students say. They bear the burden.
3. It's not a good idea to let another person hold sway over you. I left that husband. After that, no one told me what I could say, to whom, or under which circumstances.
Having learned that, I was able to support Hillary Clinton, raise money, campaign, and vote for her.
Republicans and NRA supporters may call you names. They say you are whining while never having been sequestered in school when automatic fire is all around.
At Sandy Hook, babies were killed. Promising little first-graders just beginning their educational adventures. Those little ones were too young to mount a protest.
But this time, you did it! You are articulate, informed and unafraid! You are courageous and intrepid.
So from me, the girl who stood in the freezing mud on campus in 1965 to protest the "credibility gap" and marched in Washington against the war, I say - "Here's the torch!"  Proud to pass it on to a generation so well-prepared for the fight!
Note to Betsy DeVos: "Tests" are not what you think they are. This is a test. The schools don't fail, and the kids don't fail either. The kids pass with flying colors. Most of the schools do, too. You fail.

Former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton arrives at a historical monument, at Mandu in Indore on Monday. (PTI photo)Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is currently in India spending some leisure time in Madhya Pradesh — promoted by the state government as ‘Hindustan ka dil’. Clinton, who was in Mumbai for a conclave on Saturday, arrived in Indore a day later for a three-day private visit along with her family and friends. Thereafter, she left for Maheshwar, a town on the banks of the Narmada river in Khargone district, where she visited the Ahilya Fort.
The former US Secretary of State was in Maheshwar at the invitation of Richard Holkar, scion of the erstwhile Holkar kingdom. Maheshwar, some 91 km from here, was the capital of the erstwhile Holkar kingdom till January 6, 1818, after which Indore was designated as the capital under the reign of Malhar Rao Holkar III.
On Monday, she visited Mandu, home to historical monuments, in Dhar district of the state. Clinton spent two hours going around a number the historical sites.
Sporting a hat and sunglasses, she came out of Jahaz Mahal, built during the rule of Mandu Sultan Ghiyas-ud-din Khilji, and told reporters that she enjoyed visiting the historical sites.
“Well, today I’m just enjoying the magnificent archaeological site and learning a lot of the Indian history because of this beautiful palace ground. I am very excited about being here and everything that I have seen,” she said. The magnificent Jahaz Mahal was built in second-half of the 15th century to accommodate women belonging to the royal harem. It is located inside the walled Mandu fort.

Gym Too Small! Rutgers Moves Hillary Clinton's Event to the Stadium

March Madness, and the gym is too small!

NEW BRUNSWICK — Tickets for former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's appearance at Rutgers University were in such high demand that the school moved it to a larger location.
The school announced on Monday that rather than holding the March 29 event at the College Avenue Gymnasium, it will instead be held at the Rutgers Athletic Center in Piscataway. The Eagleton Institute of Politics said the move was being made "due to the extraordinary level of interest" in the program.
The College Avenue Gym, also know as The Barn, can hold up to 2,500. The building serves as the home site for the Rutgers volleyball team. The Rutgers Athletic Center, also known as the RAC, has a capacity of 8,000 and is the home for the basketball, wrestling, and gymnastics teams.
Students, faculty, and staff will be able to register for tickets to the event on Wednesday at 2 p.m. The public will be able to register for remaining tickets at 2 p.m., March 20. Links for tickets will be posted on the institute's social media channels, and everyone who already reserved a ticket will have a new one re-issued prior to the event. Current ticket holders will get an update on their new tickets by email, according to the school.

Hillary Clinton praises Modi for Paris deal, calls Donald Trump’s decision shameful

Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton today said that President Donald Trumps decision to pull out of climate change deal signed by world leaders in Paris summit in 2015 was shameful. In a discussion at India Today Conclave 2018 in Mumbai, she praised the role played by India in taking the leadership role at Paris climate summit.
She said it is shameful that the US is the only country in the world that is not in Paris agreement, which is an agreement within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) for dealing with greenhouse gas emissions. It also covers the aspects of carbon emissions mitigation, adaptation and finance in two years time from now.
She, however, praised the role India played in inking the Paris climate deal and making sure that it stays in place even though the US withdrew from it. Clinton said that the Indian government took every other country on board to create awareness about the perils of climate change.

Email from Hillary Clinton: Progress is a little more possible these days

This has been a big week for progress.
On Tuesday, we saw signs of hope across Texas when more than half of the fifty women running for Congress won their primaries or moved onto a run-off. Across the state, turnout among Democrats was higher than it's been in years. And yesterday, we celebrated International Women's Day by reflecting on how far we've come, and recommitting ourselves to the work ahead.
There's certainly work ahead of us, but the groups that Onward Together supports are making progress seem a little more possible these days. I hope you'll take a moment today to learn more about The Arena, one of our newer groups. They're inspiring and training activists across the country, and I couldn't be more proud.
Onward!

The first Arena Summit took place just one month later and brought together more than 450 energized people from 32 states, more than 150 of whom pledged to run for office.
The latest: Currently on their fifth summit, the Arena is on track to train more than 5,000 activists by the end of 2018. They've also launched their Spotlight program, which has already brought attention to activist and non-profit leaders doing work that matters.

Institute to recognize longtime public servant as 'advocate of American leadership'

The Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study announced today that former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will receive the prestigious Radcliffe Medal on May 25 during Harvard’s Commencement week.
Awarded on Radcliffe Day, the annual gathering to celebrate the institute’s commitment to excellence and inquiry, the medal honors individuals whose lives and work have had a transformative impact on society.
Radcliffe Dean Lizabeth Cohen called Clinton a “champion for human rights” and for the welfare of all, a “skilled legislator,” and “an advocate of American leadership to create a world in which states live up to their responsibilities.”
A former first lady, Clinton served as a U.S. senator from New York from 2001 to 2009 before taking over as Secretary of State from 2009 to 2013. She was the Democratic Party’s nominee for president in 2016, the first woman candidate for that office from a major political party.
“Hillary Clinton’s life and career are an inspiration to people around the world,” said Cohen, who is also the Howard Mumford Jones Professor of American Studies in Harvard’s Department of History. “We commend Secretary Clinton for her accomplishments in the public sphere as a champion for human rights and the welfare of all, as a skilled legislator, and as an advocate of American leadership to create a world in which states — to quote Secretary Clinton — ‘have clear incentives to cooperate and live up to their responsibilities, as well as strong disincentives to … sow discord and division.’ We salute her commitment to a life of public service and the resilience it takes to live and work in the public eye.”
“Whether in Arkansas, Washington, D.C., New York state, or traveling around the globe as secretary of state,” Cohen said, “Secretary Clinton has provided a model of what it takes to transform society, often under scrutiny: tireless effort, toughness amid the political fray, and an enduring capacity to envision a better future.”

Bill and Hillary Clinton: Stargazing

This visit took place in January of this year.

From left to right: Maunakea Ranger Tommy Waltjen, former President Bill Clinton, Maunakea Support Services General Manager Stewart Hunter, former University of Hawaiʻi Institute for Astronomy Director Guenther Hasinger, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Chief Maunakea Ranger Scotty Paiva (in back), Office of Maunakea Management Director Stephanie Nagata.
Former U.S. President Bill Clinton and his wife, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton traveled to the summit of Maunakea in early January 2018 and learned about the cultural, natural and scientific significance of the mountain.
The Clintons were shown culturally and geologically important sites before touring the W. M. Keck Observatory, one of the largest and most scientifically important optical/infrared telescopes in the world. After watching the sunset from Hawaiʻi’s highest peak at nearly 14,000 feet, the Clintons returned to Halepōhaku at the 9,200 foot elevation for stargazing.
The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo’s Department of Physics and Astronomy set up two, 9.25-inch telescopes, one with an attached camera capturing images viewed through the telescope. The Clintons were in awe during the 90 minutes of viewing the overwhelming number of stars that can be seen from Maunakea.
“We showed them the Orion nebula, Pleiades open cluster and Andromeda galaxy, and towards the end, Mrs. Clinton chose a couple of objects and moved the telescope herself,” said Marianne Takamiya, UH Hilo astronomy chair. Takamiya hosted the stargazing along with UH Institute for Astronomy astronomer Mark Chun, Waiākea High School senior Alicia Chun and UH Hilo astronomy student Mitchel Rudisel.
“Getting to show the Clintons different nebula and galaxies while sitting below one of the darkest skies in the world was an unforgettable experience,” said Rudisel.
