Crazed with Hillary Clinton Mania, The New York Times Jumps the Shark

When it comes to Hillary Clinton, apparently absence makes the heart grow curiouser and curiouser and the brain softer and softer.  The media's blonde obsession with her that generated Politico's  "shadow campaign" and "hit list" over the first two weeks of the year and Time Magazine's dominatrix image in a recent cover story, progresses unmitigated by Hillary's lack of presence anywhere.  Behind curtains and closed doors, she continues attracting media attention.

I predicted here almost two weeks ago that we were likely, in 2014, to see a plethora of these toxic mushrooms springing up on a regular basis - weekly seemed reasonable.
When the temperatures are just right overnight, you can wake up one morning after a dense dew or rain and see a plethora of mushrooms, some quite healthy and large, where the day before there were none.  If the first two weeks of 2014 are any indication, we are likely to see a literary metaphor of this phenomenon around Hillary Clinton.

SNIP

What the meme will be next week or the week after  is anyone’s guess save those who are planning it right now, but it appears that for the better part of 2014 there will be rains and ensuing mushrooms that feed on the moisture because there are some who cannot be satisfied with watching Hillary doing her splendid work in the here and now and seek somehow to part the cloak of invisibility she has drawn around her plans for the future.

This week it is the New York Times Magazine ringing in with Amy Chozick's self-congratulatory marathon event of meals, snacks, and drinks with various individuals associated with the Clintons and cleared to speak with her by Philippe Reines, one of the few who is named and actually pops his head into one of the many graphics of the labeled orbits revolving around Hillary.   The cover for the feature article, creepy and insulting, is a photoshopped, disembodied Hillary face floating among galactic clouds in a Kubrickesque way implying that removing her iconic hairstyle of the moment obliterates her power in a Samson-like way.  It does nothing, however,  to allay the media's blonde obsession with Hillary although one thing might.

The article itself is a long trek from one restaurant to another which will bore Hillary supporters who know all the characters and the parts they have played.  There is one sole newsworthy item, and that is the names of Philippe Reines's cats.  To save you the effort of locating that single tidbit, they are Ousay and Qusay, named after Saddam Hussein's sons because, Philippe relates, they are brothers and as kittens they were terrorists.  Cat parents like me can applaud the truth and his creativity in cat-naming (no small challenge).  Other than that, no news - as predicted -  because Hillary is not making any, and they do want their sales, subscriptions, and traffic nevertheless.

The only thing that is new is the level of bizarre, tabloid weirdness of that cover which I will not show on this page.  Perhaps we will not continue to see these toxic mushrooms springing up regularly after all.  In their attempt to justify the HR decision of assigning one reporter to cover the beat of one private citizen running for nothing but grandmother right now,  the New York Times has jumped the shark to the possible detriment of future attempts at big media Hillary stories about nothing and the chagrin of the reporters assigned to that beat.  Nothing more to see there, folks.

(Once again, not linking to any of this. Either you have already seen it or you will have to search for yourself. Not giving them the traffic.)

Upcoming on Hillary Clinton's Agenda?

Oh the difference between then and now!  When Hillary Clinton was secretary of State press releases with scheduled events regularly appeared in my inbox.  Now, all is speculation.  Here are some possibilities in the near and far future.

Maggie Haberman and Glenn Thrush at Politico went out on a long limb today with a prediction of personnel who might be part of a campaign for Hillary Clinton 2016.  Most of the names were predictable, and without mentioning anyone in particular, I would suggest an infusion of manners to a few of them before they begin sending emails in her name.  We may be Democrats and relatively informal people,  but this New Dem tendency of addressing people with "hey" in the subject line is offensive and unbecoming anyone associated with Hillary.

Forecasting the nature of a possible campaign of a so far undeclared candidate,  they asserted, based on unnamed sources that Hillary will activate a Twitter account soon.

After 2008, who would Hillary Clinton hire?

By MAGGIE HABERMAN and GLENN THRUSH |
One indication Clinton’s team might lean toward the latter in 2016: She is likely to soon start posting to the soon-to-be-activated @hillaryclinton on Twitter, signaling her first personal foray into the medium outside her official State Department account, according to a person familiar with the situation.

One small correction I would make to that passage:  That would not be her first personal foray into the Twittersphere.   Veterans of HillaryClinton.com will remember her Myspace, Facebook, and Twitter accounts from 2008.  The Twitterfeed ended rather abruptly right before South Dakota, if I remember correctly.   Her website was where I learned abut Twitter, and I joined to be able to follow her.  At first, I actually thought it was something she had invented because it sounds like the kind of word she would use - like "Townterview,"  for example.  I even posted a comment or sent an email,  I cannot remember which, asking if she had made that up.

We hope her social nets are more regularly moderated than in 2008 when it seemed to so many of us that the only person whose blog comments were approved were those of my dear friend Normita Fenn.   We laugh about it now but felt ignored in 2008.  It was frustrating.

In the nearer, and probably more predictable future, we see New York Magazine suggesting that our girl might attend the CDFA awards next Monday where she possibly present an award to her friend and frequent designer, Oscar de la Renta.  We love seeing her in evening wear and hope this is true.

Hillary Clinton May Attend the CFDA Awards

Meanwhile, the presenter of Oscar de la Renta's Founder's Award is still a mystery, but WWD reports that Hillary Rodham Clinton just might be on deck. Clinton is an old friend of the de la Renta's and has worn his designs on several major occasions, most notably to her daughter Chelsea's wedding as well as her husband's second Inaugural Ball in 1997. This wouldn't be her first time attending the CFDA Awards on the designer's behalf; in 2002, she went as his date in this gloriously poufy-sleeved ensemble. Here's hoping next Monday brings a repeat of this moment:

I would also like to thank Mme. Secretary again for her kindness and patience taking time yesterday to meet me. She is most gracious and generous.  I was so enthralled that I completely forgot to ask her how I can get her press releases.

I love this picture!

Media Reads on a Hillary Run: Snowy October 29, 2011 Edition

Mme. Secretary, fresh from a trip that included stops in Libya, Afghanistan, and Pakistan,  testified before the House Foreign Affairs Committee this week in her signature elegant, informed, and informative fashion.  That testimony could have received better press coverage from my POV.  What did get everyone's attention was the Time Magazine (where she is this week's beautiful cover girl) poll pitting her and Obama against the GOP candidates showing that she would trounce all comers.

Hillary Clinton and the Limits of Power

By Massimo Calabresi | October 27, 2011
... we polled her against Romney and Perry, and found that she does better, by far, than Obama, leading Romney by 17 points and Perry by 26*. Her closest aides strongly dismiss any 2012 ambitions and say 2016 is very unlikely: she’d be 69 the day of the vote that year. We don’t speculate on the source of her popularity.
New York, New York!!!! The Daily News picked up on this a couple of times. Here is the original article.

Hillary 2012? Better bet than Obama, some say

By Nia-Malika Henderson
Let the Hillary Clinton 2012 chatter begin in earnest. A new poll out by Time magazine showed that the secretary of state would trounce any of the top contenders in the GOP field.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton would trounce Republican presidential candidates Rick Perry and Mitt Romney in hypothetical head-to-head matchups for the presidency, a new poll shows.
Clinton would beat former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney by 17 points, 55 percent-38 percent, according to Time magazine. And the former first lady would blow away Texas Gov. Rick Perry by 26 points, 58 percent-32 percent.

Newsmax, in its own idiosyncratic way, has a third party seeking to draft our girl.  No one who knows anything about Hillary Clinton could seriously be entertaining this idea.  But it does appear that everybody loves and wants Hillary!

Third Party Group Mulls Hillary as Presidential Candidate

... Americans Elect is a collection of Republicans, Democrats and independents who say they are disgusted by the polarization that has poisoned American politics, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The group is collecting signatures to put itself on the ballot in every state, and claims it has collected 1.6 million signatures in California.
Among the figures frequently mentioned as a possible Americans Elect candidate are New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, former Louisiana Gov. Buddy Roemer, former Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh, and Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz. The group could reportedly seek to draft Hillary Clinton.
