Last week, we saw an incredible slate of Democratic candidates win local and statewide elections -- including those who helped turn both chambers of the Virginia state legislature blue for the first time in a decade. But while we've made strides to take back seats like these over the last few years, we're still behind.
Today, on National Run for Office Day, one Onward Together partner has a simple solution: Recruit an entirely new class of young, progressive first-time candidates to run for seats on city councils, school boards, state legislatures, and more.
Running for office is one of the most powerful ways that you can work with the people in your community to come up with real, meaningful solutions to the problems we all face. In just three years, Run for Something has elected 297 people across 45 states, and supported thousands of candidates whose turnout efforts boosted voter participation up and down the ballot.

Hillary Clinton: Meet the National Democratic Training Committee

Over and over again, this team has proven that the right candidate for office does not have to look a certain way or come from a certain zip code. Instead, what makes a leader is a passion for solving the problems that face our country and our communities, and a willingness to listen. We saw that earlier this year, when the most diverse freshman class yet was sworn into the House of Representatives -- something that would have been unimaginable even a few decades ago.
It may not ever be easy. But our country was founded on the promise that it would change -- that our union would have to be made more perfect.
The National Democratic Training Committee believes that change starts by giving every Democrat the tools to run for office. They work hand in hand with two of our incredible partner organizations, Emerge America and Run for Something, to offer online campaign trainings on everything from fundraising to field programs -- entirely for free.

Hillary Clinton on the First Onward Together Members Call

When @RunForSomething launched, they expected to find 100 people who wanted to run for local office. Instead, they've recruited 17,000 young candidates in all 50 states, built a network of 6,000 volunteers, and endorsed 308 candidates. Their new goal: recruit 50k candidates.

.@CollectivePAC recruits, trains, and funds progressive black candidates at every level of government. They've helped elect 23 officials so far and are doing a series of trainings for candidates and operatives with the goal of training 200 people by 2019 and 2020.

.@VotoLatino is working to engage Latinos in the civic process. They recently helped register 5,000 people in just one day at March For Our Lives events. Their goal: register 422,000 voters for the 2018 midterms and turn out 80% of those people.
