Hillary Clinton made a surprise appearance on Friday at the funeral of Edie Windsor, the civil rights activist who died earlier this week at the age of 88.
Windsor, nicknamed “the mother of marriage equality,” sued the United States government when it refused to recognize her marriage to Thea Spyer. Nearly 44 years after the Stonewall Uprising, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a 5–4 decision declaring Section 3 of DOMA as unconstitutional, stating that it was “a deprivation of the liberty of the person protected by the Fifth Amendment.”
Clinton began her eulogy by asking: “Doesn’t it just feel great being here to honor and remember someone who had such a positive, lasting influence on our country and the world?”
