Hillary and I mourn the passing of President George H.W. Bush, and give thanks for his great long life of service, love, and friendship.
I will be forever grateful for the friendship we formed. From the moment I met him as a young governor invited to his home in Kennebunkport, I was struck by the kindness he showed to Chelsea, by his innate and genuine decency, and by his devotion to Barbara, his children, and their growing brood.
Few Americans have been—or will ever be—able to match President Bush’s record of service to the United States and the joy he took every day from it; from his military service in World War II, to his work in Congress, the United Nations, China, the Central Intelligence Agency, the Vice Presidency and the Presidency, where he worked to move the post Cold War world toward greater unity, peace, and freedom.
He never stopped serving. I saw it up close, working with him on tsunami relief in Asia and here at home after Hurricane Katrina. His remarkable leadership and great heart were always on full display.
I am profoundly grateful for every minute I spent with President Bush and will always hold our friendship as one of my life’s greatest gifts.
Our hearts and prayers are with George, Jeb, Neil, Marvin, Doro, their families, and the entire Bush clan.
George H.W. Bush was a beloved father & grandfather, a war hero, a public servant, & a class act. In my experiences w/ him, I always valued his desire to listen, look at evidence & ask for ideas, even from people w/ different beliefs. My heart goes out to the entire Bush family.
Pulling out of the Iran nuclear deal is a big mistake. It makes America less safe and less trusted. Iran is now more dangerous. What's plan B? Anyone who thinks bombing is the answer is woefully misinformed.
As Secretary of State, I helped negotiate the crippling international sanctions that brought Iran to the table. It would be much harder a second time, now that our credibility is shot.
This week we lost 17 Americans in Parkland - the deadliest school shooting since Sandy Hook in 2012. Since then, 438 people have been shot and 138 killed in over 230 school shootings. That’s 5 school shootings every month, 16 of which classify as “mass shootings.”
Now is the time to listen to the students, teachers, and parents demanding that we end this carnage once and for all with gun safety laws that keep guns out of the hands of those who shouldn’t have them.
Powerful plea from a student who survived the Parkland shooting, David Hogg: “Please! We are children. You guys are, like...the adults. Take action, work together, come over your politics, and get something done.” pic.twitter.com/UcTNungORp
I was hiding in a closet for 2 hours. It was about guns. You weren't there, you don't know how it felt. Guns give these disgusting people the ability to kill other human beings. This IS about guns and this is about all the people who had their life abruptly ended because of guns. https://t.co/XnzhvuN1zd
Mass shootings are not inevitable. The majority of Americans support common sense gun reform. Though we feel angry, heartbroken, even helpless now, we have the power to elect people who will protect lives, not gun sellers’ profits. Remember these feelings in November, and VOTE.
Communications Director, office of Hillary Rodham Clinton
The following is by Charlie Baker, former Hillary for America Chief Administrative Officer, who asked me if I would post this:
In light of recent claims about Hillary for America’s work with the DNC during the 2016 campaign, it is important to clarify a few things and set the record straight.
First, our campaign was proud to raise money for the Democratic National Committee. The DNC was deeply in debt, and the campaign’s fundraising kept it afloat during the campaign season. In fact, as a result of the campaign’s arrangement and Hillary Clinton’s fundraising efforts, the DNC was in a better financial position following the election than it had been in decades. Such agreements are common. Al Gore’s campaign had one, so did John Kerry’s. So did Donald Trump’s. Senator Sanders entered into an agreement with the DNC as well, but raised little to no money. That is not an insult, it is just a fact. As a result, Hillary for America was keeping the party afloat, which included state party funding to administer caucuses, which Secretary Clinton lost the majority of.
Hillary Clinton was the first female nominee of a major party. She won the nomination because she earned nearly 4 million more votes than her closest opponent.
America is facing unprecedented challenges right now. Our focus needs to be on advocating for policies that help Americans, standing up against those that don’t, and electing Democrats on Tuesday, next year, and beyond.
There is a bill before Congress to make gun silencers easier to obtain. Hillary Clinton, in response to the massacre in Las Vegas, raised the issue of silencers. Why does anyone need a silencer? Time to call your Rep!
Las Vegas, we are grieving with you—the victims, those who lost loved ones, the responders, & all affected by this cold-blooded massacre.
Hillary Clinton was super active today on the subject of the now
withdrawn AHCA, an attempt by Republicans to repeal President Obama's
ACA and replace it.

Statement from President Clinton on the Passing of Martin McGuinness
Statement
Hillary
and I were saddened to learn of the death of Martin McGuinness, who
devoted his life to his beloved Northern Ireland. When he decided to
fight for peace, Martin was calm, courageous, and direct. And when he
gave his word, that was as good as gold. As Sinn Fein’s chief
negotiator, his integrity and willingness to engage in principled
compromise were invaluable in reaching the Good Friday Agreement. In the
years that followed, he played an even more important role in ensuring
that the peace would last—personally overseeing the arms
decommissioning, joining the new government as the first Education
Minister, and later serving as Deputy First Minister, and doing it all
with a sense of humor and fairness that inspired both his friends and
former foes. My lasting memory of him will be the pride he took in his
efforts to improve disadvantaged schools in Unionist and Protestant
communities. He believed in a shared future, and refused to live in the
past, a lesson all of us who remain should learn and live by. May he
rest in peace.

Statement from President Clinton and Secretary Clinton on the Passing of David Rockefeller
Statement
David
Rockefeller was a consummate businessman, a great humanitarian, and a
serious scholar. He was a kind, good man to all who met him. Hillary and
I are grateful for his friendship and his remarkable life.
Throughout his life he used his fame and fortune to do good here and
abroad. His many efforts included the establishment of the Council of
the Americas five decades ago, which was instrumental in my
administration’s efforts to alleviate the financial crisis in Latin
America and boost trade in the Americas and the Caribbean. His
tremendous support of arts and humanities in America gave millions of
people in communities across the country the opportunity to experience
our great heritage of painting, dance, music, and so much more. For
these efforts and many others, I was proud to present him with our
nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
We
celebrate a long life well-lived and send our gratitude and prayers to
his family and all who supported him on his remarkable journey.
Statement from President Clinton and Secretary Clinton on the Passing of Chuck Berry
Hillary
and I loved Chuck Berry for as long as we can remember. The man was
inseparable from his music – both were utterly original and distinctly
American. He made our feet move and our hearts more joyful. And along
the way he changed our country and the history of popular music. Chuck
played at both my inaugurations and at the White House for my 25th
Georgetown reunion, and he never slowed down, which is why his legend
grew every time he stepped on stage. His life was a treasure and a
triumph, and he’ll never be forgotten. Our hearts go out to his family
and his countless friends and fans.
We should know by now, two weeks in, what the new administration's
tactic is. Like a shell game con artist, they employ a certain sleight
of hand. They throw a fireball out that dazzles, enrages, and engages
attention. While we are attending to this distraction, even more serious
shady doings are going on somewhere else that we somehow miss. An
example.
Yesterday, Trump's meandering, inept introduction of
Black History Month so astonished (and, frankly, amused to the point of
Twitter parodies) that while we were all attending to 199-year-0ld
Frederick Douglass "who has done a terrific job that is being recognized
by more and more people," the Senate confirmed Rex Tillerson for
secretary of state while Congress removed an anti-graft section of
Dodd-Frank that will permit petroleum companies (among others) to
conceal payments to foreign governments. Actually, according to one
source, all of these things happened.
Today, at the National Prayer Breakfast, there was this:
"And
I want to just pray for Arnold if we can, for those ratings" Trump says
after boasting Apprentice "went down the tubes" once he left”
The media and the social nets went nuts! Meanwhile, back at the ranch:
Natasha Bertrand
The
US Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control on Thursday
published an amendment to President Barack Obama's sanctions order
against Russia to "authorize certain transactions" with Russia's Federal Security Service.
The
new authorization will allow US companies to pay up to $5,000 a year to
the FSB — which oversees technology imports into Russia — to secure
licenses from the security services to export information technology
products to Russia, as long as other aspects of the sanctions order
aren't violated, according to the document published by the Treasury.
Obama
issued harsh sanctions against the FSB — first in April 2015 and again
in December of last year — which it accused of playing a role in hacking
campaigns targeting US citizens and infrastructure during the 2016
presidential campaign. Read more >>>>
Who's going to notice this after Trump prayed for Arnold's pitiful ratings?
Of course back on September 24, Hillary Clinton's campaign issued this statement.
Friday, HFA senior national spokesperson Glen Caplin released the following statement in response to the new bombshell report that Trump’s foreign policy adviser is being probed for suspected meetings with senior Russian officials:
“It’s
chilling to learn that U.S. intelligence officials are conducting a
probe into suspected meetings between Trump’s foreign policy adviser
Carter Page and members of Putin’s inner circle while in Moscow. You
have to ask why he would meet with Igor Diveykin, who is believed by
U.S. officials ‘to have responsibility for intelligence collected by
Russian agencies about the U.S. election.’ This comes as Russian hackers
continue their attempts to influence the outcome of our elections,
something Trump openly invited. This is serious business and voters
deserve the facts before election day. Read more >>>>
WALLACE:
Secretary Clinton, I want to clear up your position on this issue,
because in a speech you gave to a Brazilian bank, for which you were
paid $225,000, we've learned from the WikiLeaks, that you said this, and
I want to quote. "My dream is a hemispheric common market with open
trade and open borders." So that's the question...
TRUMP: Thank you.
WALLACE:
That's the question. Please quiet, everybody. Is that your dream, open
borders? CLINTON: Well, if you went on to read the rest of the sentence,
I was talking about energy. You know, we trade more energy with our
neighbors than we trade with the rest of the world combined. And I do
want us to have an electric grid, an energy system that crosses borders.
I think that would be a great benefit to us.
But you are very
clearly quoting from WikiLeaks. And what's really important about
WikiLeaks is that the Russian government has engaged in espionage
against Americans. They have hacked American websites, American accounts
of private people, of institutions. Then they have given that
information to WikiLeaks for the purpose of putting it on the Internet.
This
has come from the highest levels of the Russian government, clearly,
from Putin himself, in an effort, as 17 of our intelligence agencies
have confirmed, to influence our election.
So I actually think the
most important question of this evening, Chris, is, finally, will
Donald Trump admit and condemn that the Russians are doing this and make
it clear that he will not have the help of Putin in in this election,
that he rejects Russian espionage against Americans, which he actually
encouraged in the past? Those are the questions we need answered. We've
never had anything like this happen in any of our elections before.
WALLACE: Well?
TRUMP: That was a great pivot off the fact that she wants open borders, OK? How did we get on to Putin?
WALLACE:
Hold on -- hold on, wait. Hold on, folks. Because we -- this is going
to end up getting out of control. Let's try to keep it quiet so -- for
the candidates and for the American people.
TRUMP: So just to finish on the borders...
WALLACE: Yes?
TRUMP:
She wants open borders. People are going to pour into our country.
People are going to come in from Syria. She wants 550 percent more
people than Barack Obama, and he has thousands and thousands of people.
They have no idea where they come from.
And you see, we are going
to stop radical Islamic terrorism in this country. She won't even
mention the words, and neither will President Obama. So I just want to
tell you, she wants open borders.
Now we can talk about Putin. I
don't know Putin. He said nice things about me. If we got along well,
that would be good. If Russia and the United States got along well and
went after ISIS, that would be good.
He has no respect for her. He
has no respect for our president. And I'll tell you what: We're in very
serious trouble, because we have a country with tremendous numbers of
nuclear warheads -- 1,800, by the way -- where they expanded and we
didn't, 1,800 nuclear warheads. And she's playing chicken. Look,
Putin...
WALLACE: Wait, but...
TRUMP: ... from everything I see, has no respect for this person.
CLINTON: Well, that's because he'd rather have a puppet as president of the United States.
TRUMP: No puppet. No puppet.
CLINTON: And it's pretty clear...
TRUMP: You're the puppet!
CLINTON: It's pretty clear you won't admit...
TRUMP: No, you're the puppet.
CLINTON:
... that the Russians have engaged in cyberattacks against the United
States of America, that you encouraged espionage against our people,
that you are willing to spout the Putin line, sign up for his wish list,
break up NATO, do whatever he wants to do, and that you continue to get
help from him, because he has a very clear favorite in this race.
So
I think that this is such an unprecedented situation. We've never had a
foreign government trying to interfere in our election. We have 17 --
17 intelligence agencies, civilian and military, who have all concluded
that these espionage attacks, these cyberattacks, come from the highest
levels of the Kremlin and they are designed to influence our election. I
find that deeply disturbing.
WALLACE: Secretary Clinton...
CLINTON: And I think it's time you take a stand...
TRUMP: She has no idea whether it's Russia, China, or anybody else.
CLINTON: I am not quoting myself.
TRUMP: She has no idea.
CLINTON: I am quoting 17...
TRUMP: Hillary, you have no idea.
CLINTON: ... 17 intelligence -- do you doubt 17 military and civilian...
TRUMP: And our country has no idea.
CLINTON: ... agencies.
TRUMP: Yeah, I doubt it. I doubt it.
CLINTON:
Well, he'd rather believe Vladimir Putin than the military and civilian
intelligence professionals who are sworn to protect us. I find that
just absolutely...
We were warned by Hillary even
though no government agency stepped up to clarify the situation. Some
of what we heard back then appears, more specifically, in what have come
to be known as the Christopher Steele Memos.
There
we learned, not only of Kremlin quid pro quos for the lifting of
sanctions, as cited below, but also of potential 'kompromat' on Trump.
(see p.9) Unfortunately, the media focused heavily on the 'kompromat'
which involved some hanky-panky with prostitutes rather than on the
bigger picture which included influencing U.S. voting blocs in order to
get Trump elected so that sanctions could be lifted. The implication of
that 'kompromat' is, of course, that Trump can be blackmailed to do
anything the Kremlin wants.
An
unverified dossier with claims about President Donald Trump’s ties to
Russia contained allegations that the CEO of Russia’s state oil company,
Igor Sechin, offered former Trump ally Carter Page and his associates a
19% stake in the company in exchange for the lifting of US sanctions on
Russia.
The dossier says the offer was made in July 2016, when Page was in Moscow
giving a speech at the Higher Economic School. The claim was sourced to
“a trusted compatriot and close associate” of Sechin, according to the
dossier’s author, former British spy Christopher Steele.
“Sechin’s
associate said that the Rosneft president was so keen to lift personal
and corporate western sanctions imposed on the company, that he offered
Page and his associates … up to a 19 per cent (privatised) stake in
Rosneft,” the dossier said. “In return, Page had expressed interest and
confirmed that were Trump elected US president, then sanctions on Russia
would be lifted.” Read more >>>>
While
it remains true that these memos have not been verified, it is awfully
spooky that these sanctions are being lifted. Can we expect the Ukraine
sanctions to fall next?
Oh, and by the way, subsequent to all of that there was this in October! No one knows who bought those shares.
Hillary Clinton and her team tried
to warn us. But, you know, emails, wikileaks, 'flawed,' 'ill,' and
'shrill.' Not the perfect (female) candidate - which is the enemy of not
just the good, but of the best yet.
The
next time the 'central committee' sends up a flare, look in the other
direction. That is where the damage will be occurring - in the shadows.
Watch this space!
Hillary
and I are deeply saddened by the passing of Janet Reno, an
extraordinary public servant who dedicated her life to advancing
justice, equality, and innovations in criminal justice that would save
and lift lives.
As Attorney General for all eight years of my
Presidency, Janet worked tirelessly to make our communities safer,
protect the vulnerable, and to strike the right balance between seeking
justice and avoiding abuse of power. From her work as a prosecutor in
Florida pioneering “drug courts” that gave first-time offenders the
chance to avoid jail time, to her leadership enforcing the Violence
Against Women Act and Brady Bill as Attorney General, she never forgot
that policy matters and makes a difference in the lives of real people.
It’s fitting that she spent her last years with family and friends,
living in the house her mother built with her own hands. Janet was her
mother’s daughter. I will always be grateful for her service, counsel,
and friendship.
So it turns out that Trump has a secret server. The FBI probably knows this, but Director Comey resists releasing any
information about the Trump-Russia investigation while being all to
willing to make statements and write letters to GOP committee chairs
about the FBI investigation of Hillary's emails and server.
Comey is the subject of a Hatch Act violation complaint submitted by Richard Painter, George W, Bush's ethics counsel. See the bottom of this page.
In response to a new report from Slate
showing that the Trump Organization has a secret server registered to
Trump Tower that has been covertly communicating with Russia, Hillary
for America Senior Policy Adviser Jake Sullivan released the following
statement Monday:
“This
could be the most direct link yet between Donald Trump and Moscow.
Computer scientists have apparently uncovered a covert server linking
the Trump Organization to a Russian-based bank.
“This secret
hotline may be the key to unlocking the mystery of Trump’s ties to
Russia. It certainly seems the Trump Organization felt it had something
to hide, given that it apparently took steps to conceal the link when it
was discovered by journalists.
“This line of communication may
help explain Trump’s bizarre adoration of Vladimir Putin and endorsement
of so many pro-Kremlin positions throughout this campaign. It raises
even more troubling questions in light of Russia’s masterminding of
hacking efforts that are clearly intended to hurt Hillary Clinton’s
campaign. We can only assume that federal authorities will now explore
this direct connection between Trump and Russia as part of their
existing probe into Russia’s meddling in our elections.”
Now more than ever, Hillary and Democrats need your support. Please donatebefore the FEC deadline at midnight.
In
response to new data showing that the economy grew at an annual rate of
2.9 percent in the third quarter of 2016, Hillary for America Senior
Policy Advisor Jacob Leibenluft released the following statement:
“Today’s
GDP release shows economic growth at its fastest pace in two years.
With more than 15 million jobs created since early 2010 and real median
incomes growing more than 5 percent last year, it’s clear we’ve made
real progress coming back from the crisis. But Hillary Clinton believes
there is still more we need to do to build an economy that works for
everyone, not just those at the top. Independent experts agree her plan
would create good-paying jobs through investments in infrastructure,
innovation and education. Donald Trump, on the other hand, would take us
backwards, with experts across the political spectrum warning his plans
would risk another recession and cost jobs.”
ON THIS DAY
On
Oct. 29, 1929, stock prices collapsed on the New York Stock Exchange
amid panic selling. Thousands of investors were wiped out.
Play that number! So many 29s! A more solid investment than a lottery ticket, of course, is a vote for Hillary.
Statement from President Clinton and Secretary Clinton on the Passing of Tom Hayden
Hillary
and I were saddened to learn of the death of Tom Hayden. His eventful
life in pursuit of peace and justice ran the gamut from protesting to
legislating, with lots of writing and teaching along the way. Attacked
first by the right as a dangerous radical, then by the left for his
willingness to compromise, Tom always marched to the beat of his own
drummer, doing what he thought at any given time would advance his
lifelong goals. Hillary and I knew him for more than thirty years and
valued both his words of support and his criticism. His intelligence,
intensity, and willingness to put himself on the line was uniquely
American. He will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with Barbara
and his children.
Statement from President Clinton and Secretary Clinton on the Passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand
Hillary
and I send our heartfelt condolences to the people of the Kingdom of
Thailand on the passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. For
seven decades, he worked to improve the lives of the Thai people,
brighten their future, and be a good neighbor, as I saw when we worked
together to support Timor-Leste, the first new nation of the 21st
century. His Majesty deepened ties between the U.S. and Thailand, our
first ally in Southeast Asia. He was a true servant leader, acting with
wisdom, strength, humility, and genuine care for the welfare of all
people. I was honored to visit Thailand as President on the 50th year
of his reign when we celebrated our shared love of jazz music, and
Hillary was grateful to have had the opportunity, with President Obama,
to visit with His Majesty on her last trip to Thailand.
His
Majesty was a kind, good leader. Our world needs more leaders like him
today. We send our thoughts, prayers, and support to Her Majesty Queen
Sirikit, His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, and His
Majesty’s entire family.
Today,
Hillary Clinton released the following statement on the official
appointment of António Guterres as the next United Nations
Secretary-General:
“I would like to extend my warmest
congratulations to António Guterres on his appointment as the next
Secretary-General of the United Nations. Throughout his career, Mr.
Guterres has proven himself to be an advocate for human rights and a
champion for the most vulnerable. As UN High Commissioner for Refugees,
he provided help and hope to millions of men, women and children who
have been forced to flee from their homes. And he is a
consensus-builder who can bring people together to advance common
interests and address common challenges. I was heartened that Mr.
Guterres indicated that gender equality will be a top priority when
filling senior positions. I strongly support efforts that increase
diversity in UN leadership. And if I’m elected President of the United
States, I look forward to working with Mr. Guterres and all of our
partners to help shape a more peaceful and prosperous future for every
global citizen.”

First, I hope everyone here weathered the storm in good shape and all
is well with all of you. It's been a worrisome time, and the crisis is
not over yet with the floods in North Carolina and South Carolina. I hope everyone is
safe.
Hillary release this statement today with some recommended links for donations. I bolded them so they stand out.
Hillary Clinton Statement on Hurricane Matthew Aftermath
As
the Southeast addresses the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew, which
killed at least 26 Americans and caused damage in Florida, Georgia,
South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia, Hillary Clinton issued the
following statement:
“In times of crisis, Americans come
together to support each other. That’s what we need to do now, as North
Carolina continues to grapple with dangerous floods, widespread power
outages persist, and communities from Florida to Virginia begin to pick
up the pieces.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the friends and
families of Hurricane Matthew’s victims. The federal government should
do everything it can to help states and communities respond to the storm
and build back better to withstand future disasters. Those who can
afford to can help families in need by donating to the Florida Disaster Fund and to Team Rubicon, a veterans’ service organization specializing in disaster response.
“As
we rebuild and remember those who were lost, we must also address the
humanitarian crisis unfolding in Haiti, where it’s reported that
Hurricane Matthew killed more than a thousand people. I encourage
everyone who can to give what they are able to Unicef’s Haiti relief
effortshere.”
As
the people of Florida and the Southeast and others prepare for and deal
with the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew, Hillary Clinton released the
following statement:
“My thoughts and prayers are with
everyone in the path of Hurricane Matthew, and my heart is broken for
the victims and their families in Haiti, Cuba, the Caribbean, and
Florida.
“This is a serious storm, and it has already caused
serious damage. If you get an evacuation order, please follow it
immediately. Bring any important documents, medicines, and your pets
with you. Listen carefully to instructions from local and national
officials. And if you’re not sure what to do, please visit ready.gov for tips on staying safe.
“To
all our local campaign staff, volunteers, and supporters: Please take
care of yourselves and your neighbors – nothing is more important than
that. To our extraordinary first responders and everyone working to
prepare for and respond to the storm: We’re so grateful for your courage
and sacrifice, especially in times like these.
“And to the people
of Florida and the Southeast, and everyone in the eye of the storm:
Stay safe, and know that America is with you. In times of disaster, we
pull together. We’ll have your back every step of the way – today, and
in the weeks and months to come.”
I know from the donors list that Hillary has a lot of supporters in
Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina – some in areas
took a beating from Matthew. Just wanted to say that you all are in our
thoughts and prayers. Hope you all came through this safely. I see your
names on the list and think of you as family.
If you were lucky enough not to be in Matthew's path, maybe you would like to help.
MAKE A DONATION
The Red Cross depends on donations to provide immediate relief. Help
people affected by Hurricane Matthew by visiting redcross.org, calling
1-800-RED CROSS or texting the word MATTHEW to 90999 to make a $10
donation. Donations enable the Red Cross to prepare for, respond to and
help people recover from this disaster.
In her plane on the tarmac at Chicago Midway Airport this afternoon,
Hillary spoke to the press. She told them Trump appears to have broken
the law and flouted U.S. foreign policy when he played a shell game with
money to cover a business venture in Cuba in the late 90s.
A few
other questions she responded to were definition of the "middle class"
and how she would respond if Trump were to bring up issues affecting the
second Clinton administration also in the late 90s.
She pegged the middle class thus and gave reasons.
"I will not raise taxes on anyone making less than $250,000.” —Hillary
As
to the second question, she responded with this and told the press they
would have to wait and see if he does raise this in a debate and hear
her response at that time.
Trump "can run his campaign however he chooses...I’m going to keep talking about the stakes in this election.”
Hillary also expressed her appreciation for the support she is receiving from Republicans.
The
late 90s are old news as far as the Clintons are concerned. The issues
have been revisited ad nauseam. The information concerning Trump's
dealings with Cuba, however, are actual news. This is what vetting a
presidential candidate looks like, and it does deserve a spotlight.
Statement from Jake Sullivan on Trump’s Reported Violation of the U.S. Embargo Against Cuba
Hillary for America senior policy adviser Jake Sullivan released the following statement in response to news that Donald Trump’s company violated the United States’ trade embargo against Cuba:
“Trump’s
business with Cuba appears to have broken the law, flouted U.S. foreign
policy, and is in complete contradiction to Trump’s own repeated,
public statements that he had been offered opportunities to invest in
Cuba but passed them up. This latest report shows once again that Trump
will always put his own business interest ahead of the national interest
- and has no trouble lying about it.”
The Trump campaign this morning: Kellyanne
Conway Was Asked Whether She Denied That Trump’s Company Spent Money In
Cuba And Said “I Think They Paid Money, As I Understand From The Story,
They Paid Money In 1998.” HOST: Are you denying that his
company spent any money in Cuba? KELLYANNE CONWAY: I think they paid
money, as I understand from the story, they paid money in 1998 – I know
we’re not supposed to talk about years ago when it comes to the
Clintons, but with Trump there is no statute of limitations.
Some of Trump’s comments on Cuba: Trump Said European Investors “Have Asked Me To Take The ‘Trump Magic’ To Cuba.” “In
a June 27 article in El Nuevo Herald (the Spanish-language version of
the Miami Herald), New Jersey casino operator Trump revealed European
investors ‘have asked me to take the “Trump Magic” to Cuba’ and build
casino-hotels in Havana.” [New York Post, 7/11/99] Trump Said He Would Earn Millions Of Dollars By Doing Business In Cuba But Would Lose His Self-Respect. “If
he were to bypass the U.S. embargo this way, Trump said, ‘I could earn
millions of dollars in Cuba. But I prefer to lose those millions than to
lose my self-respect.’” [New York Post, 7/11/99] 1999:
Trump Said He Would “Immediately Reverse The Move To Normalize
Relations” With Fidel Castro And That “Normalization Is Pure Lunacy.” “I
would also immediately reverse the move to normalize relations with the
most abnormal political figure in our hemisphere: Fidel Castro. We have
pushed him to the precipice with our embargo, helped of course by the
withdrawal of Soviet backing. Now comes a movement, backed by State
Department bureaucrats, to rescue Mr. Castro with U.S. dollars. The
striped-pants set won’t like hearing this, but normalization is pure
lunacy. If a right-wing dictator like Augusto Pinochet can be extradited
and tried for his crimes against humanity, the same treatment is due
Mr. Castro.” [Donald Trump, Wall Street Journal, 9/30/99] 2000:
Trump On The Cuban Embargo: Cuba Will Be Freed By Ideas, Not By
“Rapacious Businessmen Lining Castro’s Pockets And Propping Up His
Oppressive Regime.” “Cuba will be freed by ideas, not by
rapacious businessmen lining Castro’s pockets and propping up his
oppressive regime.” [Donald Trump, The America We Deserve, 1/15/00]
