Donald Trump: Putin's Puppy Dog

There is no dearth of kennel imagery at the Republican National Convention.  There are plenty of "dog-whistle" remarks. Last night, in the post mortem of Ted Cruz's speech, a commentator said, "Its not like he killed a puppy!" Cruz himself, in refusing to endorse Trump,  has said he will not be a 'servile puppy dog.'

If you have the general impression that the Grand Old Party is going to the dogs, however, you need look no further than the nominee himself whose running mate told the convention last night that we do not abandon our friends just before the candidate himself told the New York Times, well ... not exactly.
In an interview with David E. Sanger and Maggie Haberman, Trump said he might, as president, not honor NATO commitments if nations have not 'fulfilled their obligations to us.'  Foreign policy experts and even members of his own party are reeling.
Jeffrey Goldberg, in The Atlantic, takes the issue one step beyond, likening Trump to Vladimir Putin.

It's Official: Hillary Clinton Is Running Against Vladimir Putin

Fulfilling what might be the Russian autocrat’s dearest wish, Trump has openly questioned whether the U.S. should keep its commitments to NATO.
Jeffrey Goldberg
The Republican nominee for president, Donald J. Trump, has chosen this week to unmask himself as a de facto agent of Russian President Vladimir Putin, a KGB-trained dictator who seeks to rebuild the Soviet empire by undermining the free nations of Europe, marginalizing NATO, and ending America’s reign as the world’s sole superpower.
I am not suggesting that Donald Trump is employed by Putin—though his campaign manager, Paul Manafort, was for many years on the payroll of the Putin-backed former president of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych. I am arguing that Trump’s understanding of America’s role in the world aligns with Russia’s geostrategic interests; that his critique of American democracy is in accord with the Kremlin’s critique of American democracy; and that he shares numerous ideological and dispositional proclivities with Putin—for one thing, an obsession with the sort of “strength” often associated with dictators. Trump is making it clear that, as president, he would allow Russia to advance its hegemonic interests across Europe and the Middle East. His election would immediately trigger a wave of global instability—much worse than anything we are seeing today—because America’s allies understand that Trump would likely dismantle the post-World War II U.S.-created international order. Many of these countries, feeling abandoned, would likely pursue nuclear weapons programs on their own, leading to a nightmare of proliferation.
Trump’s sympathy for Putin has not been a secret. Trump said he would “get along very well” with Putin, and he has pleased Putin by expressing a comprehensive lack of interest in the future of Ukraine, the domination of which is a core Putinist principle. The Trump movement also agrees with Putin that U.S. democracy is fatally flawed. A Trump adviser, Carter Page, recently denounced—to a Moscow audience—America’s “often-hypocritical focus on democratization, inequality, corruption and regime change.” Earlier this week, Trump’s operatives watered down the Republican Party’s national-security platform position on Ukraine, removing a promise to help the Ukrainians receive lethal aid in their battle to remain free of Russian control.

When your only character witnesses are your own kids and the rest of the support speeches at the convention must rely on demonizing your opponent rather than advancing your image, you have a problem.  When foreign policy experts align you with our arch adversary, one for whom you have expressed a certain admiration, it should render you radioactive.
It is high time for the media to start holding a magnifying glass over Donald Trump.  There has been a lot of screaming about Hillary: three emails with little embedded (c)s and a server that was more secure that the government servers, persistent lies about what she did and said during and after the attacks in Benghazi.
When Donald Trump entertains the notion of compromising NATO, the golden fleece of the 20th century, an alliance that kept the world safe in the wake of two  world wars, he endangers national security.  When he says something is going on and we need to find out what, he is correct.  Something is going on ... with him.  We may not know what, exactly, but it is very clear that he is in no way qualified or predisposed to lead the free world.
It should not be difficult to figure out what to do.

We put Hillary Clinton’s resume side by side with Donald Trump’s. The contrast couldn’t be starker.

Statement From Jake Sullivan On Trump’s NATO Comments

HFA Senior Policy Adviser Jake Sullivan released the following statement on Donald Trump’s latest comments about NATO and his view of America’s role in the world:
“Tonight, Mike Pence said Donald Trump would stand with our allies. Tonight, Donald Trump flatly contradicted him.
For decades, the United States has given an ironclad guarantee to our NATO allies: we will come to their defense if they are attacked, just as they came to our defense after 9/11. Donald Trump was asked if he would honor that guarantee. He said… maybe, maybe not.
Ronald Reagan would be ashamed. Harry Truman would be ashamed. Republicans, Democrats and Independents who help build NATO into the most successful military alliance in history would all come to the same conclusion: Donald Trump is temperamentally unfit and fundamentally ill-prepared to be our Commander in Chief.
The President is supposed to be the leader of the free world. Donald Trump apparently doesn’t even believe in the free world.
Over the course of this campaign, Trump has displayed a bizarre and occasionally obsequious fascination with Russia’s strongman, Vladimir Putin. And he has the policy positions – and advisors – to match. Just this week, we learned that the Trump campaign went to great lengths to remove a plank from the GOP platform about aid to Ukraine that would have offended Putin, bucking a strongly held position within his own party. Previously, he celebrated the Brexit vote, and in turn, casually predicted the disintegration of Europe. And now, he won’t even commit to protecting our NATO allies against a Russian invasion. It is fair to assume that Vladimir Putin is rooting for a Trump presidency.
More broadly, Trump has apparently decided that America lacks the moral authority to advance our interests and values around the world. He has adopted the logic and positions of China, Russia, and Iran. And there will be plenty of time in the days ahead to address his strategy to strengthen our coalition against ISIS, which apparently can be summed up in one word, ‘meetings.’
The choice in this election is clear. Hillary Clinton will defend our allies. She will protect our people. And she will uphold a bipartisan tradition of American foreign policy that has made us the greatest force for peace, progress, and prosperity the world has ever known.”

Like Cruz and Rubio Bernie is Just Another Also-Ran Senator but Retains Secret Service - On Your Dime!

There is zero chance that Bernie Sanders will be the nominee, and he won't suspend his campaign.  Technically that keeps us all on the hook for big bucks.  All of this is framed by his crusade to "transform" the Democratic Party - a party he did not stand with for the Senate filibuster.

An expensive reminder that Sanders still hasn’t dropped out: His Secret Service detail

BURLINGTON, Vt. — When Sen. Bernie Sanders, the now-vanquished Democratic presidential candidate, returns to Capitol Hill to vote Monday, he is expected to be accompanied by his constant traveling companions from the campaign trail: the U.S. Secret Service.

Although Hillary Clinton has clinched the party’s nomination, Sanders retains one of the trappings of a top-notch candidate. A team of agents still guards him at his home, where they’ve constructed a small watch station on the property. They travel with him on commercial and charter flights and use a motorcade to whisk him through cities he visits. And they recently marched alongside him during a gay-pride event here in his home town after the Orlando shootings.

Such round-the-clock protection can cost taxpayers more than $38,000 a day. And with the potential for the Secret Service to be watching over Sanders through the Democratic convention in Philadelphia five weeks from now, the taxpayers may get stuck with a big security bill long after his campaign receded from the daily cable-news cycle.

Going to Blazes: Republicans Turn a Corner onto #ImWithHer Street

In a week when we lost Fr. Daniel Berrigan of the Catonsville Nine, more conflagration.
Father Berrigan, right and his brother Philip Berrigan seized hundreds of draft records and set them on fire with homemade napalm in 1968. Credit United Press International
You may remember that in February, former New Jersey governor Christine Todd Whitman, once touted as a possible presidential candidate herself, followed current NJ Gov Chris Christie's endorsement of Donald Trump with this declaration:
... she says she’s planning to vote for Hillary Clinton if Trump gets the nod. She’s keeping her options open, in case we find out something new and horrible about Hillary.
But that’s her plan now:
“You’ll see a lot of Republicans do that,” Whitman told me. “We don’t want to. But I know I won’t vote for Trump.”
The morning after a not-so-Super Tuesday with only one measly primary (I don't mean Indiana is measly, I mean a single primary does not a Super Tuesday make), everyone woke up at the bottom of the rabbit hole with a big "eat me" note signed by Donald Trump.

#ICYMI Donald Trump won the Indiana primary yesterday after, based on a National Enquirer report, casting Ted Cruz's father, Rafael, as a kind of Zelig/Forrest Gump character allegedly seen close to Lee Harvey Oswald in a photo.  N.B. Lee Harvey Oswald was the purported "single actor" in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.  Prior to 11/22/63 Oswald spent some time working for the "Fair Play for Cuba" coalition in New Orleans and hung with some Cuban refugees at the time.

Outrageous as the story appeared, not to mention the absurdity of a presidential candidate citing the National Enquirer as a source, it not only dominated the news all day yesterday but also served its purpose in that Cruz swallowed the bait and addressed it in a news conference rather than brushing it off as farce.  In the wake of his resounding loss in Indiana last night, and, some speculate, the shady attack on his father, Cruz suspended his campaign last night leaving Trump as the presumptive GOP nominee.

Then came the dawn ... and the inferno.

Republicans burn registration cards and rally behind the #nevertrump campaign as lifelong GOP voters prepare to support Hillary Clinton in a bid to block Trump

  • Republicans are burning their voter cards and rallying behind #nevertrump
  • The billionaire business mogul is now the GOP's presumptive candidate
  • But he remains deeply unpopular with swathes of the party elite and voters
  • Many Republicans are planning to vote for the Democrats to keep him out
A number of disappointed Republicans have torched their voter cards and declared support for the #nevertrump campaign after the billionaire businessman clinched the party nomination following Ted Cruz's resignation.
Such is the resentment towards Trump, many are now readying themselves to vote for the Democrats despite being lifelong Republican supporters.
Photographs of them burning their voter registration cards have appeared on social media, while others Breaking newssay they are prepared to vote for Hillary Clinton.
Until a short while ago, the Mathematical Impossibles, Bernie Sanders (who won IN by a small margin but has a snowball's chance in a bonfire of being nominated) and John Kasich remained.  Breaking news is that Kasich will hold a presser from Columbus, OH at 5 pm EDT and will also sing his swan song.

In other news, the New York Times reported yesterday, on our first U.S. climate refugees in Louisiana having to evacuate their ancestral home for higher ground - or rather for ground - as their island is slowly being inundated.  Today, the New York Times reports, an entire town in Alberta CA is also under evacuation due to "apocalyptic" wildfires.  Climate change disaster is already upon us.  It is biblical. Floods and combustion abound and one viable candidate remaining has a plan for climate change and a long history of battling it

Hillary Clinton steadfastly maintains that she is not the one to tell Bernie Sanders to suspend his bid since she remained into June 2008.  But, clearly, there are issues.  Hillary is the candidate with the concrete, pragmatic plans.  Even Republicans are flocking to her.

John Kasich, saying his heart is not in this, is listening to his party leadership and exiting. Bernie Sanders, while he runs under the Democratic Party banner, should also withdraw at this point.  It was never his party to begin with, and the stakes are too high for grandstanding.

Disaffected Republicans are not feeling the Bern.  They are burning their Republican registration cards and grabbing the one sensible hashtag: #ImWithHer.  Hillary is the revolution. Bernie is too myopic to see it. He should do his part in the #NeverTrump movement and move aside so that Hillary Clinton can adjust her focus to the real threat: A Trump White House.

Keeping Up with Hillary Clinton ... Enthusiasm, Stamina, and Trust at the Fore

Yesterday in Wisconsin, Hillary Clinton participated in a forum on gun violence in Milwaukee, rallied voters in La Crosse, toured a technical college, and visited a brewery, also in La Crosse.  Hillary never forgets the people who labor unseen to make our days safe and comfortable - that includes those keeping "Happy Hour" happy.

From there, Hillary hit the trail again, this time back home to New York for what we are certain will be a rousing homecoming rally this morning at the legendary Apollo Theater on 125th Street in Harlem.

Hillary Clinton Campaign Event in Harlem, New York Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton speaks at a campaign event in Harlem about a variety of topics, including income inequality and national security. New York’s presidential primary will be held on April 19.

This program has not yet aired
Hillary's event schedules, not to mention her four years of daily schedules as secretary of state, fly in the face of a fairy tale one of the three Republican candidates has repeatedly tried to spin that Hillary lacks the stamina required of a POTUS.  These attempts have met with the same failure as his efforts to spark chants of "USA" at his campaign rallies.  That same chant has erupted spontaneously and enthusiastically recently at Hillary's speeches after victories in FL, NC, and AZ without Hillary's prompting. The same Republican front-runner, who boasts of the strength to take out ISIS, whines perpetually about Megyn Kelly bullying him and says his campaign manager was rightfully protecting him from an assault by Michelle Fields, formerly of Breitbart.

Last night, all three remaining Republican candidates rescinded their loyalty pledges to support their party's nominee. Let's remember that these three folks expect Americans to put them on a podium on the Capitol steps to take the oath of office!  How good is their word?  Any of them?

Bernie Sanders also has recently waffled on whether he would support a Hillary Clinton candidacy.
We can point to verifiable evidence of Hillary's trustworthiness on this and many issues. Hillary has always said she would back her party's nominee, and has a history of having done so.  She has never waffled. Let me share, with those of you who are new to Hillary this cycle, the email we received from her on June 27, 2008 after she suspended her campaign.
Jun 27, 2008
Dear Friend,
On February 8, in Unity, New Hampshire, 107 people voted for me, and 107 people voted for Senator Barack Obama.
Today, Barack and I were in Unity to celebrate a unified Democratic Party focused on electing him the next president. I was proud to stand with him today, and I will do whatever I can to help his campaign between now and November.
Senator McCain and the Republicans may have hoped that we wouldn't join forces like this. They may have wished that we wouldn't stand united to fight this battle with everything we've got.
But I've got news for them: We are one party; we are one America; and we are not going to rest until we take back our country and put it once again on the path to peace, prosperity, and progress in the 21st century.
Click here to watch the video of today's unity rally in Unity, NH.
Sincerely,
Hillary
Immediately after this rally, Hillary hit the trail for the Obama/Biden ticket and campaigned her heart out.  She lost some supporters along the way.  Not all of the "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pantsuits" agreed with her wholehearted support of her former opponent, but I pointed out then and do again now, that Hillary Clinton is a woman of her word.  Her plans are carefully crafted, intersectional, and pragmatic.  She will not promise what she cannot deliver, but when she promises, you can count on her to deliver.

On that note, Hillary is the one making the policy speeches on specific issues and policy plans while the other remaining four give boilerplate stump speeches.  There is a difference between a policy speech and a stump speech.  Hillary's speech on the subject of the Supreme Court this week is but one example.

Please feel free to share this with those less familiar with Hillary Clinton than we are.

Attacks Dominate the News: Hillary Clinton Focuses on the Important Ones

The only two people not remaining mindful of the Brussels attacks, the ongoing police activities, and the implications for homeland security here in this country are two of the candidates campaigning to lead us.  This should be cause for pause and reflection on the part of anyone considering voting for them.

After rattling off, in the wake of the attacks, their slash-and-burn plans for defeating ISIS, Donald Trump and Ted Cruz moved on to occupy themselves with attacks that seem, to them, to be much more crucial: personal accusations that have made their way to tabloids.

Cruz accuses Trump of planting National Enquirer story alleging affairs

Trump hits back: 'I had absolutely nothing to do with it.'

To hear Ted Cruz today, the rhetoric of outrage and  indignity indeed would be appropriate to a terrorist attack - a level we did not hear from Cruz after the actual bombings.  Trump's responses about not knowing are equally disconcerting.

Someone should do a corpus search of his speeches, interviews, and press conferences for [negatives+know].  It appears Donald Trump knows nothing about anything and represents an unfortunate throwback to the Know Nothings of the 1840s and 50s who sought immigration abatement.  Why would anyone vote for that?

Hillary Clinton, meanwhile has delivered a major address and held a round table on homeland security in the days since the attacks while the two top Republican guys squabble about personal jabs and tabloid scandals of questionable sourcing.

Can you imagine what Hillary's campaign would look like if she concerned herself with tabloid stories?  Can you fathom what critics would be saying about her?

Hillary soldiers on with a real and doable plan to protect us all and keep us safe from true danger and terror.  Hillary's story is not among the headers on The Nightly News this evening.  The Trump-Cruz story is.  What a sad testament to the duty of the press to inform voters.

Here is Hillary Clinton's response to the true outrage of the week.

Hillary Clinton has a real plan to defeat ISIS and prevent another attack like Brussels. Here’s how.

Mar 25, 2016 by Elizabeth Chan
“If Mr. Trump gets his way, it will be like Christmas in the Kremlin.”
Tuesday’s terrorist attacks in Brussels were a horrifying reminder that the fight against ISIS and radical jihadist terrorism is far from over. Keeping us safe at home and defeating ISIS and global terrorism abroad are going to be some of the biggest challenges facing our next Commander-in-Chief. And that’s why we need to elect a president who’s prepared to do all parts of the job from day one.
Hillary Clinton responded to the Brussels attack, explaining her plan to defeat ISIS and the global terrorist movement, and sharing her vision for the role that America and our allies must play in the fight against terrorism around the world. Here’s what you need to know (and you can read her full remarks here).

1. The threat of terrorism knows no borders—and we aren’t going to stop it with a wall.

In the past year alone, terrorists have attacked transportation hubs in Brussels, a nightclub and restaurants in Paris, a office holiday party in San Bernardino, a hotel in West Africa, a beach resort in Tunisia, a market in Lebanon, a Russian passenger jet in the Sinai—and too many other places. The threat of terrorism in the 21st century is real, urgent, and borderless.
As Hillary said, “Walls won’t protect us from this threat. We can’t contain ISIS—we must defeat ISIS.”

2. ISIS and terrorist groups like them are constantly adapting and operating across multiple spaces, so our response needs to be just as nimble and far-reaching.

Today, ISIS controls a sizable (yet shrinking) territory in Iraq and Syria—but it also leads a wider network that reaches across the Middle East and North Africa and into Europe, Asia, and North America and includes other terrorist groups. To win the war against global terrorism, Hillary argued that we have to do battle on each of these fronts.
And she has a plan to do that:
Hillary for America

Hillary’s plan calls for taking out ISIS’s stronghold in Iraq and Syria by intensifying the current air campaign, stepping up support for local forces on the ground, and pursuing a diplomatic strategy to resolve Syria’s civil war and Iraq’s sectarian conflict between Sunnis and Shias—both of which have contributed to the rise of ISIS.
But we also have to dismantle the global terror network that supplies money, arms, propaganda, and fighters. That doesn’t just mean going after enablers who help jihadist terrorists with things like travel and document forgery—it also means denying them virtual territory by discrediting their ideology online and stopping their digital recruitment strategies.
And hardening our defenses and building our resilience at home will help us discover and disrupt plots before they’re carried out. That requires an intelligence surge, including partnering with Silicon Valley to track and analyze ISIS’s social media posts and map jihadist networks online. As Hillary said, “The tech community and the government have to stop seeing each other as adversaries and start working together to protect our safety and our privacy.”

3. Our alliances have been core pillars of American power for decades. They should be reinforced, not abandoned.

America’s alliances make us stronger. Hillary argued that turning our back on our European allies who are on the front lines of the war on terror would be dangerous and foolish, and it would send the wrong signal to our friends and our foes. “Putin already hopes to divide Europe,” Hilary said. “If Mr. Trump gets his way, it will be like Christmas in the Kremlin. It will make America less safe and the world more dangerous.”
What Republicans like Trump don’t understand is that we need Europe. We need European intelligence and diplomacy, European banks fighting terrorist financing, European aircraft flying missions in the Middle East, and European special forces helping train and equip local forces fighting ISIS.
In fact, we need Europe to do more—and that’s why Hillary called on our European partners to take more steps to stop the flow of foreign fighters to and from the Middle East. Knowing the identities of every fighter with a European passport who makes the trip, revoking passports and visas, and sharing information in real time is essential in this fight. So is a commitment by countries like Belgium to identify and invest in the neighborhoods, prisons, and schools where terrorist recruitment happens.

4. Despite what Republican candidates for president say, we need to rely on what actually works—not on what makes a catchy sound bite or riles up the base.

Take it from our nation’s former chief diplomat: Bluster doesn’t work—we can’t just “carpet bomb” populated areas “into oblivion,” as Ted Cruz has suggested. Bigotry is also an unacceptable response: Hillary pointed out that it’s just as dangerous to promote offensive, inflammatory rhetoric that demonizes all Muslims—the very people who are most likely to recognize the warning signs of radicalization before it’s too late and who are in the best position to block it. And torture—a tactic promoted by Donald Trump—puts our troops and civilians at greater risk. That’s why Hillary pledged that if she’s elected president, she will never condone or practice torture anywhere in the world.
So what does work? Smart, strong, steady leadership from the United States. As Hillary said, “No other country can rally allies and partners to defeat ISIS and win the generational struggle against radical jihadist terrorism. Only the United States can mobilize common action on a global scale in defense of our peoples and our values. And that’s exactly what we need to do.”

Voters need to ask themselves which type of attacks are personal to them: the verbal kind that target individuals related to a campaign or the ballistic kind that killed Americans and others in Brussels this week.

Hillary Clinton Discusses Homeland Security in Los Angeles .. Republicans Scuffle in the Schoolyard

The impact of the terrorist attacks in Brussels was so powerful that it knocked a primary/caucus Tuesday off the 24/7 axis for all but a few hours relegating the results to something of a page 2 status.  If they were going to remain relevant at all, the candidates were going to have to make statements on the topic, and so they did.

Hillary Clinton issued a statement and quickly went about arranging to deliver a major address on the issue at a university noted for its foreign policy and political science programs.  She was introduced by a past ambassador /faculty member.  Former cabinet members were in the audience along with notables from Silicon Valley.
03-23-16-OZ-23
03-23-16-OZ-06

Bernie Sanders also made a statement.  Ted Cruz proposed police patrols in Muslim neighborhoods (without knowing how many Muslims there are in the United States) while Donald Trump allowed that Salah Abdelsalam would have been talking a whole lot more quickly if authorities had only water-boarded him,  part and parcel of Trump's pro-torture platform plank and corollary to the "good guy with a gun" principle.

And that was that.

By this morning, two days after attacks so devastating that survivors cannot be identified due to the extent of their injuries, the Republicans succeeded in pulling their campaign to an all-time nadir.  In much the same way that 5th graders frame insults in terms of  "your mama..," the Trump-Cruz battle raged on in puerile commentary about their respective spouses.  Cruz, who likes to couch comments in movie references, did his best imitation of Bugs Bunny imitating John Wayne.  The challenge was issued.  It was pretty much the equivalent of a triple-dog-dare. Typical middle school strategy when you didn't study for the test.  It's about what?  Foreign policy?  Food fight in the cafeteria!  So much for ISIS, Belgium, and terrorists.

Hillary Clinton remained on topic.  At the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, she held a homeland security round table with Muslim community leaders.  Apparently she does intend to find out what we can all do to keep each other safe and secure.
