Hillary Clinton: What I've been thinking about this summer

Onward Together!

This summer hasn’t looked the way any of us expected. This administration’s handling of a global health crisis has been frustrating on their best day and cruel on their worst. I’m thinking of every person who has been affected by this pandemic, and I’m grateful for the continued work of those who have been keeping our hospitals, our businesses, and even our families running without much support from the White House.

I hope that, despite everything, you’ve found time to safely connect with loved ones, do some yoga, or disappear into a good book. I was lucky enough to get an advanced copy of my friend Louise Penny’s latest mystery novel, and while I won’t spoil anything, it was the perfect escape. I’ve also been spending much of my time talking with a number of smart, fascinating people for my new podcast, and I can’t wait to share those conversations with you.

Like many of you, I’m still mourning the death of Congressman John Lewis. John was the truest kind of patriot. He believed America could live up to its highest founding ideals of equality and liberty for all. I was honored to call him a friend, and I’m so proud of the Onward Together team members who have been relentless in making what John called “good trouble”:

  • In the midst of a pandemic that is disproportionately affecting people of color, Latino Victory is doubling down on electing candidates who understand the challenges that women of color are facing right now. Last month, they launched the First Latinas program to increase representation in government by electing Latina women who are running for seats that have never had a Latina representative or who will achieve a ‘first’ milestone.
  • For organizations that work directly with voters, this election looks different than any others. But our partners have quickly redirected their efforts online to ensure the safety of staff and voters alike; the Alliance for Youth Action put together a list of online steps for becoming an at-home organizer, while Run for Something collected resources for first-time candidates to navigate this new reality. And Arena launched their Academy 201, where political professionals can participate in free, advanced trainings on everything from how to deal with rapidly-changing plans to how to center racial equity in a campaign environment.
  • And of course, Color of Change has continued to lead the fight to end practices -- including police brutality, voter suppression, and uneven access to health care -- that hold Black people back.

It’s up to us now to continue John’s work, and I know I can count on this team to do just that. With November drawing closer, the most important thing you can do right now is to vote and ensure others can vote, too. Visit iwillvote.com to confirm your registration or request an absentee ballot, then head to democracydocket.com to get the latest in the fight to give more voters access to mail-in voting.

Onward,

Hillary

Hillary Clinton: 30,000 votes

Onward Together!

Every time there is a long line at a polling place, a ballot isn’t counted, or voting is anything but a straightforward, simple process accessible to all citizens, it’s a threat to our democracy. In the midst of a global pandemic, it’s up to us to prevent a public health crisis from exacerbating a democratic one -- and one solution is dramatically expanding and safeguarding vote by mail so that Americans can cast their ballots this November.
Onward Together is proud to have teamed up with Democracy Docket in the fight to ensure that all Americans can have their ballot counted this fall -- while remaining safe and healthy.
Elections matter, and all too often, small differences in voting totals can change the course of history. In 2018, the U.S. Senate race in Florida was decided by 10,033 votes and the gubernatorial race was decided by 32,463 votes. A study of more than 30,000 rejected mail ballots found that the rejection rate for vote by mail ballots for the youngest voters was nearly ten times the rejection rate for those over 65. Meanwhile, mail ballots cast by minority voters were more than twice as likely to be rejected than mail ballots cast by white absentee mail voters.
Similarly, a study of rejected mail ballots from Georgia’s closely contested 2018 election found that newly registered, young, female, and minority voters were more likely to have their ballots rejected.
We can protect our democracy from unfair, unequal laws -- but we have to push election officials to do the right thing as soon as possible. If you’re able to, please make a contribution to fund this work:

Hillary Clinton: George Floyd's life mattered

Onward Together!

George Floyd’s life mattered. Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor's lives mattered. Black lives matter.
Against a backdrop of a pandemic that has disproportionately ravaged communities of color, we are being painfully reminded right now that we are long overdue for honest reckoning and meaningful action to dismantle systemic racism.
If you’re in a place to give, donate today to support groups working to end systemic racial injustice, increase the elected representation of Black people, and fight Republican efforts to suppress Black votes.
Collective Future is working to recruit, train, and fund Black judicial, prosecutorial and attorney general candidates to ensure more representative leaders for the criminal justice system. Color of Change is a national online force dedicated to holding corporations and elected leaders accountable in the fight to end practices and systems that unfairly hold Black people back. Higher Heights supports the Black women’s leadership pipeline. And the NAACP Legal Defense Fund works toward racial justice through litigation, advocacy, and public education.
What we are seeing across the country right now is the power of solidarity. Many of us will never know the pain of having to sit our son or daughter down and have “the talk” about how carefully they need to act around police, because the slightest wrong move could get them hurt or even killed. But we can recognize our privilege, practice humility, and speak out against white supremacy in all its forms.
For many white people, conversations about systemic racism and our own privilege are uncomfortable. Here's what I've learned over the years: That discomfort is a good thing. It's a necessary part of examining our own biases and actions, and our own role in perpetuating inequality.
One of the most important steps we can take is to educate ourselves. Ijeoma Oluo’s So You Want To Talk About Race is a great and thoughtful starting point, as is White Fragility: Why It's So Hard for White People to Talk about Racism by Robin Diangelo. If you’re looking for fiction, Alice Walker’s The Color Purple and Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye both tackle race, gender, and violence through the lens of Black womanhood.
These are tumultuous times for America. But we cannot turn a blind eye to what's happening right now. We should listen, and learn, and participate in building a country that lives up to our highest ideals. The only way out is through.
I promise to keep fighting alongside all of you to make the United States a place where all men and all women are treated as equals, just as we are and just as we deserve to be.
Onward,
Hillary

Hillary Clinton: How we can protect access to the ballot

Onward Together!

As the COVID-19 crisis continues, it is clear that the security of November’s elections will rely on ensuring that millions of Americans can vote by mail. For many of us, this is a shift in the way we make our voices heard, and state officials need to take action immediately to ensure that all Americans, no matter where they live, can safely cast their votes.
Onward Together is proud to partner with Democracy Docket, a new effort to proactively detect and combat suppressive voting laws and practices that could sway the outcome of the 2020 elections.
Make a contribution now and help give more people -- regardless of party or political preferences -- a fair chance to cast their ballot while staying safe and healthy.
As with any method of voting, vote by mail is susceptible to the voter disenfranchisement that has plagued our country in recent elections. From Georgia to Wisconsin, we’ve seen the ways uneven access to the ballot can affect the outcome of critical races. Restrictions and voter purges disproportionately burden African Americans, Latinos, young and first-time voters, non-native English speakers, and voters with disabilities.
The team at Democracy Docket has identified more than a dozen specific laws in select states that they intend to challenge through litigation as we approach one of the most consequential elections of our lifetimes.
Now is when election officials must act, and it’s up to us to push them to do the right thing. Learn more at DemocracyDocket.com, then chip in to support this vital work:

Hillary Clinton: What our partners are doing right now

Onward Together!

First, to the medical professionals, grocery store employees, delivery drivers, pharmacy workers, mail carriers, firefighters, police, nursing home employees, and everyone else who is working to save lives and keep us all going right now: Thank you. I am so grateful for your sacrifice.

Second, if you’re home and healthy, I hope you’ll take a moment to check out the efforts of a few of our Onward Together partners. They have worked quickly to fill gaps in our systems and help candidates quickly move their campaigns online, and I’m grateful for them, too.
  • The National Domestic Workers Alliance has created the Coronavirus Care Fund to support the many nannies, house cleaners, and in-home caregivers who are navigating this crisis without paid sick leave or health care.
  • The Collective Education Fund has teamed up with Humanity Forward to raise money for working families affected by the COVID-19 crisis.
  • The Texas Civil Rights Project is calling on statewide officials to ensure that Texans will be able to vote safely
  • Swing Left has launched a virtual organizing hub, so that you can help elect Democrats while still staying home.
  • Latino Victory is providing daily updates on what current and former Latino Victory candidates and allies are doing to respond to COVID-19
  • Emerge is offering a brand-new five-part webinar series to help Democratic women campaign during the crisis, and the last webinar is tomorrow.
  • Run for Something put together a candidate support kit with resources for state and local candidates who need to find new ways to reach voters.
  • Arena has moved their May training for future campaign staffers online -- and you can apply now to be a part of it.
We don’t have to feel helpless. Whatever you have to give -- an hour, a few dollars, or just a quick read -- makes a difference.

Stay safe and healthy,
Hillary

Hillary Clinton: Energy

Onward Together!

We launched Onward Together because I wanted the same energy that powered our campaign to winning the popular vote to be funneled directly into doing the work we knew this administration wouldn’t prioritize -- like expanding access to the ballot and making sure that women, people of color, and young people have a voice in our government.

Support from this team has made it possible for us to offer financial support and other guidance to 14 (and soon to be 15!) partner organizations, which in turn has enabled those organizations to fight for our shared values. Our friends at Run for Something have connected hundreds of young candidates to their first-ever campaigns, while one of our newest partners, the Texas Civil Rights Project, is working to reunite families separated at the border.

We need your support right now if we want to start 2020 off stronger than ever. Will you make a contribution of $25 or more before midnight tonight?

Thank you for all that you do -- and happy New Year!

Hillary Clinton: Meet our newest Onward Together partner

Onward Together!

It’s been a busy few months. Chelsea and I have been on tour for our first book together, The Book of Gutsy Women. Meeting people -- and hearing about the gutsy women in your own lives -- has been a source of inspiration for us and the entire Onward team as we prepare to head into 2020 stronger than ever.
Our family grew this year with the arrival of our third grandchild. And I’m thrilled to tell you that the Onward Together family is growing, too; we’re adding two new partner organizations this winter. The first, Texas Civil Rights Project, is working to advance equality and justice in Texas through legal advocacy and litigation.
You can learn more about the Texas Civil Rights Project below, and then head to texascivilrightsproject.org to be a part of their work.

Thank you -- and onward!

Hillary Clinton: Invest in a generation

Onward Together!

Every time a new partner joins the Onward Together family, I'm reminded of how many people believe that, when we work together, we have the power to make our country better.
That belief is also why I'm asking you to give to Onward Together this Giving Tuesday. With one contribution of $25 or more, you’re investing in an entire generation of progressive organizations -- including two new partner groups that I look forward to telling you more about soon.
With your help, we can not only support our current partners, but find even more groups that are already doing the most good and need a boost from a team like ours.
Give to Onward Together today -- and then stay tuned to hear about our newest partners:

Hillary Clinton: This Thanksgiving

Onward Together!

Before you sit down and share a meal with loved ones today, I’d like to ask you to consider making a donation that will be evenly split among 12 groups working to protect children and families who have been affected by the administrations cruel border policies.

More than a year after the first reports of children being taken away from their parents at the border, there is still so much work to do, from reuniting families to making sure that those seeking asylum have the resources they need to navigate a complicated system.

Too often, it feels as though all we can do is read the news and be heartbroken. I’m grateful that, over and over again, this team has chosen to take action.

This Thanksgiving, please make a contribution to support 12 groups working on protecting and reuniting families at the border:

Thank you -- I hope your holiday is warm and wonderful,

Hillary Clinton: Happy National Run for Office Day!

Onward Together!

Last week, we saw an incredible slate of Democratic candidates win local and statewide elections -- including those who helped turn both chambers of the Virginia state legislature blue for the first time in a decade. But while we've made strides to take back seats like these over the last few years, we're still behind.
Today, on National Run for Office Day, one Onward Together partner has a simple solution: Recruit an entirely new class of young, progressive first-time candidates to run for seats on city councils, school boards, state legislatures, and more.
Running for office is one of the most powerful ways that you can work with the people in your community to come up with real, meaningful solutions to the problems we all face. It's also one of the most rewarding things you'll ever do -- I should know. And when more Democrats run, we all win. In just three years, Run for Something has elected 297 people across 45 states, and supported thousands of candidates whose turnout efforts boosted voter participation up and down the ballot.
If you're ready to run for office or are interested in learning more about what it takes to run, please go to www.RunforOfficeDay.com and get started. The team at Run for Something will walk you through the process:

Hillary Clinton: An update on our partners

Onward Together!

Last month, I joined our friends at the Albert Shanker Institute and the American Federation of Teachers for a conference on the ways we can protect and defend American democracy. In my opening remarks, I spoke about the risks that voter suppression, fake news, and a lack of election security pose to our country’s very foundation.
The founders of four Onward Together partner and grantee organizations also joined the conference as panelists that day: Eric Holder of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, Andrew Gillum of Forward Florida, Leah Greenberg of Indivisible, and María Teresa Kumar of Voto Latino.
Watch what we had to say here.
Meanwhile, it’s a busy time for all of the groups we work with. Our friends at Run for Something Action Fund have just launched WhereCanIRun.org, an all-new site that helps potential candidates decide where, how, and when to run for office. Dream Big Nevada, one of our grantee organizations, is raising money to cover DACA renewal fees for eligible young people -- and you can contribute today.
As always, I’m grateful to have you on this team.

Hillary Clinton: How the National Democratic Redistricting Committee is fighting gerrymandering

When this country was founded, voting was a right for some and a pipe dream for others. While generations of courageous advocates and leaders have helped extend that right to more and more people, the “one voice, one vote” system is still up against the mass gerrymandering that has happened under Republican-controlled state legislatures and governorships since the 2010 elections. Our friends at the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, an Onward Together grantee, have a plan to combat map manipulation by targeting 16 state legislative chambers and three gubernatorial races in 2019-2020 cycle. If you care about fair redistricting, sign up now to learn more about their plan.
Republicans in states across the country have manipulated the system in order to choose their voters, rather than letting voters choose their representatives. We’ve seen the effects of gerrymandering at every level, including more than one presidential election in recent history. Ending “map manipulation” at the national and state level is crucial to the future of our democracy.
Onward Together was a proud partner in the work NDRC did in 2017 to defend three Nevada state senators from a conservative-led recall campaign. Learn more about what the NDRC is doing now to combat gerrymandering by adding your name:

A Message from Hillary

I hope you’re staying cool this very warm summer.
Bill and I were thrilled to cheer on the US Women’s National Team at the World Cup last month, and even more thrilled just a few weeks later to welcome our third grandchild into a world in which women rule -- at least on the field. Chelsea and I have also been hard at work on a new book that celebrates some of our favorite “gutsy” women; you’ll be able to read it this fall.

Meanwhile, summer can be a difficult time for groups like our Onward Together partners to raise money. People go on vacation, the weather is hot, and attentions drift. But I know that this team has the power to stay focused on what matters.

Today, make a donation to Onward Together so that we can ensure that these groups and more get the attention they need this summer and beyond.

Hillary Clinton: How you can support immigrant and refugee children today

Wednesday marked one year since the United States District Court in the Southern District of California ordered ICE and the U.S. government to reunite an asylum-seeking mother and her seven-year-old daughter -- which they did, after months of waiting.
Meanwhile, hundreds of families are still waiting to be reunited, and more are being separated and sent to isolated detention centers. In the past few weeks, we’ve seen reports about CBP forcing children to take care of toddlers in holding cells, and DOJ lawyers actually trying to argue that the Trump administration doesn’t have an obligation to provide detained children with items as basic as blankets, toothbrushes, or soap.
Please make a donation to support the organizations working to protect children and families at the border.
Together, we've raised more than $700,000 this week that will help get basic resources, legal aid, and advocates to children at the border, among other things -- with our help, Families Belong Together has been able to cover the costs of flights for families finally being reunited and secure safe housing for vulnerable immigrants. Thank you for making that possible. It's critical that we provide a counter-point to the unconscionable things being done to refugee and immigrant families in our names.

Hillary Clinton: Families still belong together

There are amazing groups at the border and beyond doing critical work to defend the rights of immigrant and refugee children. If you can, please chip in to support a few of them today.

Some of the toughest and most rewarding conversations I've had over the last several years have been with children who had immigrated to the United States with their parents. They’ve told me about the harrowing journeys they had undertaken, the sacrifices their families had made, and their hopes and fears about their lives here. Over and over again, I’ve been struck by their bravery and their vulnerability.
I have thought of these children as this administration has instituted cruel and divisive policies meant to make finding refuge in the United States more difficult than ever before, and I've been heartbroken and horrified to read the news of children at the border being detained in appalling conditions. While it's hard to process that our country is committing such abuses -- and against children -- in our name, it's important that we not stop at outrage or heartbreak.
Last summer, we asked you to contribute to groups doing work to reunify and protect families at the border -- and together, we raised more than $1.5 million to provide affected families with supplies, legal aid, travel funds, and more. That work continues, and is just as critical, one year later. Today, I'm asking you to make a contribution that will be split across 11 organizations working toward immediate justice for immigrant families:

Hillary Clinton: Announcing the winners of our grant contest

Earlier this month, I went to a reunion at Wellesley College, my alma mater, where I celebrated alongside my classmates and considered how far we’ve come in fifty years. So many of the things we take for granted these days would have seemed far-fetched back then, and yet, we believed that progress was possible and that we could see it made real.

Our Onward Together partner organizations have been at the forefront of the fight for that progress these last few years. They’re recruiting and training hundreds of diverse candidates for office, mobilizing voters who may not otherwise feel engaged in the political process, fighting back against the administration's attacks on civil rights and access to the polls, and more. They’re organizing domestic workers, communities of color, young activists, and even campaign staffers. They are the future.

Today, I’m proud to announce the winners of our first-ever Onward Together grant contest: Color of Change PAC took first place, while Demand Justice, Run for Something, and Voto Latino will also receive prizes as runners-up. As always, your support makes it possible for us to fund these organizations that have been such bright spots recently, and I’m grateful to you for that.

Hillary Clinton: How our partners are taking on gerrymandering

... and how you can join in, too.

After the 2020 census, state legislatures will redraw district lines across all fifty states. We only have to look at the way those lines have shifted over the last few decades to infer that Republicans will feel comfortable using the redistricting progress to disenfranchise voters and ensure GOP majorities for the next decade.
Gerrymandering is a critical issue, and one that should define the 2020 election. I wasn’t at all surprised to learn that three of our Onward Together partner organizations have put their heads together and come up with a plan to ensure that Democrats win key elections next fall.
This week, our partners at Swing Left, Run for Something, and Arena launched the Grassroots Redistricting Project. They’re targeting legislative chambers in nine states to ensure that Democrats have a fair say in the redistricting process, but they’ll need the power of this team to make it happen.

Hillary Clinton: Meet the National Democratic Training Committee

Over and over again, this team has proven that the right candidate for office does not have to look a certain way or come from a certain zip code. Instead, what makes a leader is a passion for solving the problems that face our country and our communities, and a willingness to listen. We saw that earlier this year, when the most diverse freshman class yet was sworn into the House of Representatives -- something that would have been unimaginable even a few decades ago.
It may not ever be easy. But our country was founded on the promise that it would change -- that our union would have to be made more perfect.
The National Democratic Training Committee believes that change starts by giving every Democrat the tools to run for office. They work hand in hand with two of our incredible partner organizations, Emerge America and Run for Something, to offer online campaign trainings on everything from fundraising to field programs -- entirely for free.
I’m so proud that Onward Together has been able to support the National Democratic Training Committee. Their work is critical to electing Democrats in thousands of offices across the country now and for years to come. Today, I hope you’ll take a moment to learn more about how their training program works -- and perhaps think about running for office yourself!
