Hillary Clinton with Stephen Colbert

Hillary joined Stephen Colbert on The Late Show Tuesday night.  Emma Stone was there too and was so excited! She brought her book along for Hillary to sign and also got a shot with Hillary to promote her new movie about Billie Jean King. No. It is not a selfie because neither of them took it herself.

Hillary Clinton Looks Back in Anger

By David Remnick

She talks about Trump, Comey, collusion, “deplorables,” and the power of sexism.

The cover of the magazine’s post-election issue, had Clinton won. “I felt that I had let everyone down,” she recalls. “Because I had.”
Hillary Rodham Clinton, who, as she puts it, won “more votes for President than any white man” in American history, is not the first candidate to capture the popular vote but lose the election. She is the fifth. The Founders, for varying reasons, distrusted popular democracy. Southerners were wary of a challenge to slavery; others feared the emergence of a national demagogue. The Electoral College, Alexander Hamilton wrote in Federalist Paper No. 68, would block the rise of a leader with “talents for low intrigue, and the little arts of popularity.” An extra layer of electoral deliberation, he thought, would also insulate the American system from a hostile hack from abroad—“the desire in foreign powers to gain an improper ascendant in our councils.”

Andrew Jackson was the first to suffer this constitutionally enabled result of losing-while-winning, when he conceded the 1824 race to John Quincy Adams. Jackson, whose portrait now hangs in the Oval Office, charged that he had been undone by a rigged ballot. In 1888, Grover Cleveland lost in much the same manner to Benjamin Harrison, but then avenged his humbling four years later. Samuel Tilden fell to Rutherford B. Hayes, in 1876; and yet, after the baroque, months-long struggle inside the Electoral College, Tilden seemed almost relieved. Now, he said, “I can retire to private life with the consciousness that I shall receive from posterity the credit of having been elected to the highest position in the gift of the people, without any of the cares and responsibilities of the office.”

In the ballot of 2000, Albert Gore, Jr., Bill Clinton’s Vice-President for eight years, won half a million more votes than the governor of Texas, George W. Bush. After losing the final battle before the Supreme Court, Gore soon departed Washington to brood in Nashville. He grew a beard. He grew fat. He seemed, at first, quite lost. When I visited him there, a few years later, he said he would eventually get around to confronting that bitter experience, just not yet. He never fully did so, certainly not at book length. Instead, with time, he shaved his beard, travelled the world giving lectures and making a documentary about climate change, and, in 2007, shared the Nobel Peace Prize with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. He made a fortune as an Apple director, a Google adviser, and a venture-capital partner. He found his way. And whenever someone brought up the election of 2000 he always remembered to lighten matters, saying, “You win some, you lose some, and then there’s that little-known third category.”

Transcript: Hillary Clinton on NPR with Terry Gross

It's always good to have a print record of Hillary's words. Let's not twist and spin her words out of context. Save that muscle power for the laundry.

Hillary Clinton says she would not rule out questioning the legitimacy of the 2016 election if new information surfaces that the Russians interfered even more deeply than currently known. In an interview with Fresh Air's Terry Gross about her new memoir, What Happened, Clinton acknowledges that such a challenge would be unprecedented and that "I just don't think we have a mechanism" for it.

I want to add this, on the subject of Fake Americans for Hillary (AKA Hillary Supporter Trolls) that I have been pursuing here.

On the night of July 4, 2017, HBO aired a documentary entitled The Words That Built America. Both Hillary and Bill Clinton appeared in it. It was a bipartisan effort. Many Democrats and Republicans participated. It focused on the Declaration of Independence and The Constitution.

The previous July, at the Democratic National Convention, Khizr Khan had offered his pocket Constitution to Donald Trump. Pocket Constitutions went like hotcakes after that. All of which is to say that Americans, particularly Hillary supporters, had both the means and the reasons to review the U.S. Constitution over the course of that year.

Since the election last November, and increasingly after the inauguration as the ill-begotten Trump presidency rolled on, many voices called for the nullification of what evermore apparently was a flawed election. Early on, I joined that chorus - one time. A lawyer friend quickly pointed out that there was no Constitutional mechanism. I went back to the Constitution. Indeed, there is none.

Thereafter, for awhile, whenever I saw these cries to invalidate the election, I reminded my friends of this glaring absence. Some simply responded with, "True." Others suggested that we can change the Constitution, which is also true, but we cannot make such a change retroactive.

When one Facebook "friend" mounted this proposal, and I posted my stock response, "We don't have a constitutional mechanism to do this," I was met with a hostile barrage of argumentation. It ran a course like this. (Not verbatim. I no longer have access to that. This was the gist.)
Troll: We can change the Constitution.
Me: Yes, but we can't make that change retroactive.
Troll: Yes, we can write it in.
Me: It would never be ratified in that form. The electoral states she lost will never ratify an amendment like that.
Troll: She can sue.
Me: Hillary had a whole contingent of lawyers, both paid and volunteer. If a lawsuit had a basis, don't you think they would have done this already?
Troll: You just don't want Hillary to be president. Why do you say you support her? You are a Bernie or Trump supporter.
Me. I give up.
This troll is one of the ones I later tracked to an Eastern European location and is not a U.S. citizen. As such, is not in a position to "change the Constitution." Unless there is a plan for these folks to somehow influence our government, why use "we?"

As I have mentioned, I have not figured out what their agenda is other than to ramp up emotions among Hillary supporters. When a cool head intervenes, that individual is accused of disloyalty to Hillary. I do think that the mission is driven by emotion- particularly anger. They want Hillary voters riled up.

So! I am glad to see a very cool head, the candidate herself, who also is a lawyer, making my point. I am not gloating.  I just dislike seeing my fellow Americans baited and barking up the wrong tree.

(FTR: I am not going to stop talking about them. We used to call it "consciousness raising" in the old days.)

Hillary Clinton's Local Book Signing

Hillary delighted her neighbors at a book signing near her home on Saturday.

Chappaqua resident Hillary Clinton's first book signing in the area was a big hit as a large crowd turned out Saturday as she signed copies of her newly released book, "What Happened" in Brookfield, Conn.
Some arrived Friday night to wait on line to be assured of meeting the former first lady and secretary of state when she arrived around noon.
When Clinton, dressed in a royal blue pantsuit, arrived, she went straight to the families, greeted each one by name and shook their hands.

Your Facebook Friend Might Be a Troll If ...

I remain buried in Hillary's Trolls, Bots, Fake News, and Real Russians chapter. The more I read there, the more certain I am that the Hillary Clinton coalition on Facebook has not only been infiltrated, but that the incursion is effective. A few points.

In this chapter, quoting a Time article she refers to "soft" Clinton supporters. I think that is what I was trying to articulate yesterday in this post. I referred to the "old guard" Hillary supporters that I met and friended in 2008 as opposed to the "new friends" that I accepted in the course of the last campaign and afterwards. That old guard consists of hard core, seasoned Hillary supporters who went through a great deal in 2008 and never had any impulse or intention of hiding their support in secret groups. They are the ones who waited for years for Hillary to declare again and were prepared to jump on the already moving train. The newbies were just meeting Hillary for the first time. Many had been Obama supporters in the past and never paid any attention to Hillary previously. I met many of these at early organizing meetings. Their eyes would widen as we related well known facts about Hillary. It was all new to them. I don't count all the newbies as "soft" supporters, but I think all the soft ones were newbies.

These newbies are also the ones friending the Facebook trolls I have sniffed out. Not just friending. Believing. Quoting.

Further, in the same paragraph.
"It's against the law to use foreign money to support a candidate, as well as for campaigns to coordinate with foreign entities...."
I know you knew this and knew that Hillary knew it. I raise it because I did publicly question one of these folks. She claimed to have worked for the campaign. I asked what she did, and she said she campaigned online (despite not knowing a single name of any of the folks directing the social media campaign) and donated money. I told her privately that she was impugning Hillary, whom she claimed to "love," since foreign donations are illegal. There was no remorse. She fought back. Well, she would have donated if ....

Another, from a different Eastern European country, listed herself as having worked as a personal assistant, Hillary for America. When I confronted that lie, I was told she would have been a great personal assistant if she had worked for HFA which she could not because she was in and of the wrong country.

Wow! There's a whole lot of subjunctivity going on there.

At this point, you might be thinking that they are just wannabes, and what's so bad about that? I hear you. But there is something more insidious. A darker agenda hidden deep and disguised among the rhapsodies about Hillary's big blue eyes.

In this chapter, Hillary quotes Charlie Sykes quoting Garry Kasparov.
"The point of modern propaganda isn't only to misinform or push an agenda. It is to exhaust your critical thinking and annihilate truth."
She cites Breitbart as a major source of the propaganda that flowed through Facebook and other social media in 2016. The Harvard study cited here confirms that. The origin of the more formalized posts these Facebook trolls share is unclear, but they are cleverly written and often contain one tiny alarmist kernel.

When I pressed on the issue of attribution, I was told by one of them that I was too academic. That social media is not academic, and citing sources is unnecessary (and, by the way, my kind of insistence on attribution is what lost the election for Hillary). I am very old-fashioned and unhip to expect attribution on social media.

The pending civil war she warned of - the one her friends picked up and posterized - came, it turns out, from a remark by Roger Stone. There's a credible source!

On another occasion, the alarmist kernel was that the market is headed for a crash. One thing you can always predict about the market is that it will fluctuate. When it rises steadily for a long time, there will be a correction. That warning reminded me of a meme that circulated shortly after Obama was elected. Those on the right warned of a coming apocalyptic crash and encouraged investing in gold. Remember that?

There is some scuttlebutt about Breitbart, Bannon, and a dip, but what true supporter of Hillary Clinton would gloat over the prospect that her supporters, "fellow Americans," might lose their investments in their 401Ks  and 403Bs? I can tell you. A Fake American disguised as a supporter who is out there to circulate fake news - AKA propaganda.

When I say that these trolls know the language but not the culture, that is part of what I mean. This one did not know that Main St. is already invested in Wall St.

These little cultural items are clues to sniffing them out. But it takes careful reading not cheerleading. As I said, these are little kernels embedded in larger messages that appear to praise Hillary - while often condemning Trump. It is easy to get caught up in the "passion."

I am still reading that same chapter, slowly, because every so often I have to stop and process the relationship between what I read and what I see happening with these trolls.

I don't have a sense yet of why these Hillary trolls are soaking up Hillary friends. Of what the objective is. I can at this point say only that I know they are there. I have chatted with a few of them, and from those chats I know they are who I am saying they are. There has to be a reason. I believe we are being targeted every bit as much as these voters as Hillary quotes in her book.
"We know that swing voters were inundated. According to Senator Warner, 'Women and African Americans were targeted in places like Wisconsin and Michigan.' One study found that in Michigan alone nearly half of all political news on Twitter in the final days before the election was false or misleading propaganda. Senator Warner has rightly asked: 'How did they know to go to that level of detail in those kinds of jurisdictions?'"
Your Facebook profile states where you live. These trolls hide their locations and masquerade as Americans. Just being friends with them, you are providing a lot of data. They know where you are, where you live, and a lot about what you think.

How can you tell if your Facebook friend is a foreign troll? Read posts and rants carefully and critically. Sometimes a gift will jump right out at you. I groaned about the prospect of jury duty on a case that will go into October. The response: "Just tell them you don't want to do it."  Yeah, right. You're an American! Ha!

Hillary Clinton at Edie Windsor's Funeral

Hillary Clinton made a surprise appearance on Friday at the funeral of Edie Windsor, the civil rights activist who died earlier this week at the age of 88.
Windsor, nicknamed “the mother of marriage equality,” sued the United States government when it refused to recognize her marriage to Thea Spyer. Nearly 44 years after the Stonewall Uprising, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a 5–4 decision declaring Section 3 of DOMA as unconstitutional, stating that it was “a deprivation of the liberty of the person protected by the Fifth Amendment.”
Clinton began her eulogy by asking: “Doesn’t it just feel great being here to honor and remember someone who had such a positive, lasting influence on our country and the world?”

Hillary Clinton on PBS News Hour

ICYMI, here it is. Judy Woodruff is always very confrontational with Hillary, but Hillary goes in knowing that and stands her ground. After a rough start where Woodruff tried to blame Hillary, Bill, and Loretta Lynch for Comey being in charge of the email investigation (he was the FBI Director - who else would have been in charge?), Hillary hit back and unblocked the potential log jam. It's one of those interviews where you start out going GAAAH!

"Keep Going!" - Harriet Tubman

Am I on a campaign? You bet your britches I am! Am I talking a lot about foreign national trolls co-opting Hillary spaces on social media? Yup! Is this a Sisyphean effort? I hope not. Much as I feel affection for Don Quixote, I hope I am not jousting at windmills.

In her chapter on Trolls, Bots, Fake News, and Real Russians, Hillary outlines how she sees outside interference in our electoral politics and the 2016 election.

There is, from what I can glean, a difference between the pro-Trump Russian trolls Hillary analyzes and the "pro-Hillary" Eastern European trolls I have sniffed out. It is cultural and relates to familiarity with American electoral demographics. Trump's Russian trolls, from Hillary's point of view, must have had informational support from within our borders and probably within our citizenry. There was cultural and regional sophistication in their messages to targeted audiences.

The trolls impersonating Hillary supporters are still seeking and developing that kind of cultural resource. They are doing this by soliciting friends large-scale on Facebook.  "If you are for Hillary, friend me!" "If you agree with this post, friend me!" "FRIEND ME!"

Many have done so without noticing that these personalities neglect to make public their location (not here) or other personal information that most Facebook friends routinely make public. They are shadowy. Some list questionable background information. "Personal Assistant, Hillary for America." In Poland? (Well she doesn't say that is where she is, but that is very likely where she is.) Personal assistant to whom? Is there anyone else here - and I know you all worked hard on the campaign - who would list yourself as a personal assistant? Seriously? It tests one's limits of credulity if you know what I mean.

What jumps out at me is that those who have accepted these friend invitations tend to be those I never met until 2015 -2016. My  old guard of Hillary friends from 2008 have not succumbed. They are savvy, vigilant, and not easily fooled. You know who you are. Hillary's tough veterans. It's the newbies who either didn't bother in 2008 and 2012 or were Obama voters who knew next to nothing about Hillary going in and still don't really know her now who succumb. But that is a big group!

Posts from these entities - and I am not that certain they are real people as opposed to "personalities" developed for social media - tend to vary. The personalities tend to be female, and the posts sometimes abound with hero worship and girl crushiness with which most of us can identify, no matter our age, in our personal journeys with Hillary.

Other posts, however, are stylized. Most importantly, perhaps, the language differs. The English is more polished. They tend to be rants on current events. Typically, the information is about 90-95% verifiable, but there is a statement buried in there somewhere, e.g. Trump has "brought us to the verge of civil war," or "We Hillary voters have been forgotten."

Both first person pronouns are inappropriate since the person posting this is not part of "us" on the verge of civil war nor "we" Hillary voters. The writer is a foreign national who neither lives nor can vote here, a person impersonating an American and not honest enough to apprise Facebook friends of that crucial personal fact. She doesn't live here, and we are hardly on the verge of a civil war. The system is at work. Americans have faith in the system even though it screwed us in the election. It's cultural. Americans have faith in the system even in the worst of times.

If you come from what Helen Mirren refers to as a dark Slavic (or Magyar or post-Soviet) mind set (she is half Russian in case your didn't know), you might not understand or appreciate that within a single generation, American immigrants are the most optimistic people on earth.

It is hard to know to know what the agenda is with these people.

Experts in foreign policy and Russian politics, as Hillary points out in her book, have put forth a theory that the Russian pro-Trump trolls probably had American assistance in formulating the targeted messages they spread on the social nets leading up to Election Day 2016.

Some Republicans have said, I believe sincerely, that we must uncover exactly what influence Russia exerted over the 2016 election because "next time it could be us." Right. We all should be concerned.
One thing the pro-Hillary trolls seem not to understand is that only on the extreme fringes of the political spectrum do Americans think the opposition party is the devil. Their posts reflect this misunderstanding. Democrats do nor think all Republicans are evil. Republicans do not think all Democrats are evil. We recognize some degree of common ground and applaud those on the other side of the aisle who voice these shared values. This is lost on the pro-Hillary Eastern European trolls. They are so resistant to this concept that I doubt that they will ever find American informants equal to those the Russians developed in 2015 and 2016. Most American Democrats, and I believe we are the target, do not swing that way.

That is not to say that we should blow them off as insignificant. They are not, and something is up there. They are doing what they do ostensibly under Hillary's banner, so we should be concerned. I have gone after a few trying to use logic.

Forget that. They are combative. They slap back.

I have a background in applied linguistics.  When I see a statement like "I love the Broadway," my antennae go up. The Broadway is a theatre. I saw Evita there several times in the early 80s. Hamilton is playing there now. The referenced show was actually at the Vivian Beaumont at Lincoln Center. The post was written as if the author had been at the performance: "You should have seen...."
It was partially a linguistic clue and partially cultural. When I mentioned that Lincoln Center is not actually considered "Broadway" I was immediately slapped back and told to "grab a map of Manhattan" so I could see that "the Broadway is a road in Manhattan." A clever troll would have looked at my profile and noticed that some of my grad studies were at 120th and Broadway (Columbia Teachers College). Instead, she just attacked. Very combative. And why?

And so on and so on and scooby dooby doo.

I have found a handful of these Eastern European trolls. As I find them, they block me on Facebook. My concerns are these:

They post
1. under a Hillary banner,
2.  erroneous, untrue, and some inflammatory comments,
3.  what seem to be some manufactured posts provided by unknown sources.
That last is the most unsettling. The language of those is markedly different. The English more polished, and those are the posts with one little item that is alarmist, incendiary, dangerous. It is those little items that their American friends pick up, posterize, and spread on Facebook. I cannot help but think - exactly as planned.

To what end? That remains to be seen.

As for me. I have fought too long and hard for Hillary Clinton to let foreign nationals gain another foothold in this country - especially in her name. I intend to keep going.

P.S. Being called a Bernie supporter and then a Trump supporter by these trolls did nothing to endear me to whatever their cause. My history is in the archives here. But it is not about me. It is about how Hillary is portrayed. I no longer trust people who will not say where they live. Screw that!

I will not be silenced on this matter. keeo going? You bet your boots I will!

Hillary Clinton on "The Today Show"

Wow! How did I miss this one? I didn't know she was scheduled to be on and would certainly have been there given the fury she expressed in her book regarding Lauer's "moderation" of the Commander-in-Chief Forum.

I do not normally watch this show anymore since I didn't like how they ganged up on Ann Curry. If, like me, you missed this appearance, here it is.

Rachel Maddow's One-on-One with Hillary Clinton

I don't know why I am always blown away by how much information Hillary Clinton can pack into a few minutes, but I am. Hillary was on for 55 minutes. She had spoken uninterrupted and said so much at the beginning that I thought she had used up half the show. Then I looked at the clock.  She had been speaking for only 14 minutes.

Rachel noted, at the end, that Hillary made some very strong comments regarding Facebook, Fake Americans, and the influence they held over our election. This is, as Rachel notes, a national security issue.  I keep saying, it does not really matter which side a Fake American pretends to be on. A Fake American "Hillary supporter" is just as capable of impugning Hillary and/or other Democrats and Americans in general with untrue or alarmist statements as a Fake American on the right.

During the 2015-2016 election cycle, I applied a bit less scrutiny than normal in accepting Facebook friends. My intention was an expansion of an audience for Hillary's words, plans, and voter base and to drum up donations. I succeeded in doubling the number of Facebook friends tied to Hillary from the post-2008 number.

In the aftermath, I discovered that I had indeed accepted friend requests from some questionable entities who were less than forthcoming vis-à-vis their nationality/citizenship and location. My bad! I intend to be more assiduous in vetting friends in the future and to do my small part in depriving duplicitous and noxious trolls a platform on my news feeds for their fictional news. If there is a single divergence between these folks and the woman they claim to love and hold as a role model, it is on the role of honesty and transparency in trust.

During the campaign, there were detractors who questioned Hillary's honesty. She is among the most painfully honest people in the public eye. So it is ironic that these impostors resist transparency. That can only raise questions about their trustworthiness.

That said, I think we all can appreciate the honest foreign nationals who admire Hillary and provide truthful coverage of her initiatives.

This community here contributed impressively in many ways to Hillary's campaign: phone banking, pounding the pavement and knocking on doors, registering voters, providing primary day information, and making donations.

Hillary has made it clear that she will not appear on another ballot, but she is not leaving the arena. We will all be here to boost her efforts going forward.

Here is the full interview in case you missed it. Probably tomorrow Rachel will have the complete one-on-one posted at her website. It will play again at midnight EDT.

Forgiveness v. Absolution

The more I read Hillary's book, the less I feel inclined to provide context.

What is forgiveness? What is absolution?  There is a difference.

Hillary Clinton says she does not forgive people who didn't vote in the 2016 presidential election and now say they regret it.
In an interview with CNN Wednesday, the former Democratic candidate told Anderson Cooper that more than two dozen women apologized to her for not voting or otherwise helping to advance her campaign. Clinton appeared on Cooper's show 360° to discuss her new memoir about her loss to Republican Donald Trump, titled What Happened.
"When it first started happening, it was so soon after the election," Clinton told Cooper. "It was hard for me to comfort somebody who was coming to me and saying, 'Oh, I wish I had done more,' or, 'I'm sorry I didn't vote' because I think this was one of the most consequential elections that we have faced in a long time."
"So, no absolution," Clinton added. "But I just hope people will take what happened this time seriously and be ready and willing to vote the next time."

What Might Have Been: President Hillary Rodham Clinton

In her memoir, What Happened, Hillary quotes these words by John Greenleaf Whittier.
"For of all sad words of tongue or pen, The saddest are these: "It might have been!".
Hillary's supporters need no reminder. We live with the consequences of an election gone wrong. All Americans do.
The words come from this poem which, itself, deserves a spotlight for its commentary.

Maud Muller (1856)

John Greenleaf Whittier (17 December 1807 – 7 September 1892) was an American Quaker poet and abolitionist

  • Maud Muller, on a summer's day,
Raked the meadows sweet with hay.
Beneath her torn hat glowed the wealth
Of simple beauty and rustic health.
  • So, closing his heart, the Judge rode on,
And Maud was left in the field alone.
But the lawyers smiled that afternoon,
When he hummed in court an old love-tune.
  • He wedded a wife of richest dower,
Who lived for fashion, as he for power.
Yet oft, in his marble hearth's bright glow,
He watched a picture come and go:
And sweet Maud Muller's hazel eyes
Looked out in their innocent surprise.
  • A manly form at her side she saw,
And joy was duty and love was law.
Then she took up her burden of life again,
Saying only, "It might have been".
  • Weary lawyers with endless tongues.
  • Alas for maiden, alas for Judge,
For rich repiner and household drudge!
God pity them both! and pity us all,
    Who vainly the dreams of youth recall;
For of all sad words of tongue or pen,
The saddest are these: "It might have been!"
Our "might have been" is front and center this week with the release of Hillary's book and the ensuing book tour comprising TV appearances, press interviews, and appearances at book stores and public venues.

Here is a note on an upcoming interview in The New Yorker.
The cover “The First,” by Malika Favre.

Over the past ten months, many Americans, regardless of how they voted, have contemplated what life would have looked like if Hillary Clinton had been elected President on November 8, 2016. In at least one respect, we can now share a definitive answer. Above is the cover “The First,” by Malika Favre, that The New Yorker would have published had Clinton defeated Donald Trump to become the first female Commander-in-Chief.In next week’s issue, David Remnick speaks with Clinton about her new memoir, the campaign, her stinging loss, and its aftermath; their conversation touched on the former F.B.I. director James Comey, accusations of Russian interference, and the role of sexism in Trump’s victory.

From Bill Clinton on the Passing of Pete Domenici

Statement by President Bill Clinton on the Passing of Senator Pete Domenici
I am saddened by the passing of Senator Pete Domenici, who served the people of New Mexico honorably for 36 years. Though we often disagreed politically, I always respected him for his deep convictions and his belief that compromise is essential for a functioning democracy. He was one of the Senate’s great mental health advocates, and I’ll always be proud to have signed the Mental Health Parity Act into law, which required the same coverage limits in health insurance policies for mental and physical illness, and for which he fought so passionately. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Nancy, and his entire family.
###
Echo from a time when bipartisan agreement was unremarkable; it wasn't that long ago. Rest in peace, Senator.

Hillary Clinton on "The View"

ICYMI Hillary sat down with the ladies of The View this morning.

This is Day 2 of her book tour. Note to the people who are already tired of seeing Hillary promote her book on TV, here's a neat invention you might like.
For everybody else, catch Hillary tonight with Anderson Cooper on CNN. Check local listings for AC360. Tomorrow night she will be with Rachel Maddow on MSNBC.

The Office of Hillary Clinton

In conjunction with the launch of her memoir, What Happened, Hillary has completely overhauled her website. I was apprehensive for a nanosecond, but unnecessarily. All of her policies are still there. It's always good to be able to shoot one of these links off when needed on social media.
Check it out!

Hillary Clinton's Interview with Refinery29

Among the many criticisms that trailed Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton during her presidential campaign was her awkward effort to connect with millennial voters. It felt too “forced,” said some. Others thought she was “pandering” — not just to young people, but to minorities. (This included many of my friends, who said her references to "hot sauce in her bag" and hitting the Nae Nae on Ellen were just trying too hard.) Even President Obama joked that she was like everyone’s “Aunt Hillary” who doesn’t quite get Facebook.
Yet last week there I was, a Black and Latina millennial voter, sitting down with the first woman ever to make a serious run for the White House, and we had no trouble connecting at all. When I asked about President Clinton’s support of her on the campaign trail, she lit up, reached over to touch my arm, and smiled, telling me she wished more young men understood that marriage should be a balanced and supportive partnership. I made a mental note to share with my future husband, if I ever have one: “Hillary Clinton once told me…”

Hillary Clinton Surprises Bookstore Line with Pizza!

Who else would think to do this? Hillary knew that a line has started last night for a book signing today at the Union Square Barnes & Noble. I know a pack of my Facebook friends were there camping out for the night. What did Hillary do? She sent them pizza!

In her memoir, What Happened, which debuted today, she recounts President Obama advising her during the campaign not to try to be hip. Reminding her that she's a grandma, he told her to be herself. She's a pretty hip grandma if you ask me!

The former secretary of state had Joe’s Pizza delivered to a group of people lined up outside of a Barnes & Noble in New York City a day before a scheduled signing for book What Happened.
“Already a line for @HillaryClinton book signing (that’s tomorrow) #WhatHappened,” Clinton Staffer Greg Hale tweeted, along with a photo of the shocked members of the line.
Clinton, 69, tweeted back with, “Enjoy! See you all tomorrow!”
One of those to receive a slice, Aurora De Lucia, wrote, “Y’all I’m outside Barnes & Noble Union Sq waiting for @HillaryClinton’s signing 2mrw AND HER STAFF DELIVERED PIZZA “FROM THE SECRETARY.”

Hillary Clinton: In Her Own Words on the Election and Her Marriage

Many thanks to PYW who shred this in a comment thread. It truly deserves a post of its own.

For Better, for Worse

In this excerpt from her campaign memoir, Hillary Clinton reflects on the bond that has helped her through victory and defeat.
I was confident that Bill would be great at parenting. His father died before Bill was born; he knew how lucky he was to have this chance that his own father never had. Still, a lot of men are thrilled to be dads but not so thrilled about all the work that a child requires. The writer Katha Pollitt has observed how even the most egalitarian relationships can contort under the strain of child rearing, and all of a sudden the mom is expected to do everything, while the dad pitches in here and there. She calls it becoming “gender Republicans”—a nifty phrase, if perhaps a little unfair to all the feminist Republicans out there, who really do exist.
I knew that I had enough energy and devotion for two, if it turned out that Bill wasn’t a co-equal in the child-raising department. But I really hoped that wouldn’t happen. Our marriage had always been a true partnership. Though he was governor and then president—jobs that would seem to “beat” a lot of others, if you were the kind of person who ranked jobs like that—my career was important to me, too. So was my time and, more broadly, my identity. I couldn’t wait to become a mother, but I didn’t want to lose everything else about myself in the becoming. I was counting on my husband not just to respect that but also to join me in guarding against it.
So it was a wonderful thing when Chelsea arrived ....

"One America Appeal" Expands to Include Irma Recovery

From the Clinton Foundation.
FORMER U.S. PRESIDENTS’ "ONE AMERICA APPEAL” OFFICIALLY EXPANDS TO INCLUDE IRMA RECOVERY
Initial plan to raise funds for organizations helping Hurricane Harvey victims in Texas and Houston now will also direct monies raised to the Florida Disaster Fund
The “One America Appeal” launched last week by all five living former presidents to raise private money for hurricane victims today announced that their efforts will also aid Floridians impacted by Hurricane Irma through the Florida Disaster Fund, following its activation by Governor Rick Scott.
The Florida Disaster Fund is the State of Florida’s official private fund established to assist the state’s communities as they respond to and recover from destructive storms. In partnership with the public sector, private sector and other non-governmental organizations, the Florida Disaster Fund supports response and recovery activities.
One hundred percent of funds donated to the Florida Disaster Fund will go toward disaster-related response and recovery because the fund has no overhead costs.
This weekend, One America Appeal is also launching a second public service announcement, “One America Appeal,” which will air during the NFL’s telecasts all day Sunday and Monday night. The PSA alerts viewers that online, tax-deductible donations may continue to be made at OneAmericaAppeal.org.
A special restricted account has been established through the George H. W. Bush Presidential Library Foundation to collect and quickly distribute donations to ensure 100 cents out of every dollar goes to assist hurricane victims. In addition to the Florida Disaster Recovery Fund, donations will also be shared with the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund focusing on the greater Houston region, and the Rebuild Texas Fund assisting communities across the state.
The PSA “One America Appeal” can now be seen online at OneAmericaAppeal.org.

Hillary Clinton on "Sunday Morning" with Jane Pauley

Folks in the path of Hurricane Irma, among others, might have missed this interview this morning.

Email from Hillary Clinton

Friend --
I have been thinking lately about bravery -- the bravery of citizens like Heather Heyer who lost her life fighting the organized forces of hate and divisiveness, of volunteers who are rescuing strangers in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, and of young DACA recipients who are fighting for their future in the only country they know and love.
Some days, it feels like the work left to do is insurmountable. But if I've learned anything, it's that those are the days we need each other the most. That's one of the reasons we created Onward Together: to support smart, passionate activists who know what needs to be done and could use a little bit of our help to get there. You can read more about one of the groups we're supporting, Run for Something, below. I hope that in learning more about these groups, you find yourself inspired to get in what my friend John Lewis calls "good, necessary trouble."
I've also been reading a lot. I was riveted by historian Timothy Snyder's "On Tyranny" and by Elena Ferrante's final Neapolitan novel. Yes, I've enjoyed a few good mystery novels, too. And I've been fortunate enough to see quite a bit of theater -- if you get the chance to see "Come From Away" on Broadway, take it.
This fall, I'll be embarking on a book tour of my own -- which means that I'll be able to see many of you while I'm out on the road. Click here to get more information about where and how you can get tickets, and hopefully I'll see you soon.
Onward!
Hillary

Onward Together works to build a brighter future for generations to come by supporting groups that encourage people to organize in their communities or run for office. Because you're an important part of Onward Together, we wanted you to get a chance to know these groups a little bit better. To learn more about Onward Together, click here.
The organization: Run for Something
The organizers: Amanda Litman, former HFA email director, and Ross Morales Rocketto, veteran campaigner and political operative.
The mission: Recruiting and supporting talented, passionate young people who will advocate for progressive values now and for the next 30 years, with the ultimate goal of building a progressive bench.
The story: When Amanda and Ross launched Run for Something on Inauguration Day, they thought they'd have to push and push to eventually get even 100 people to learn more about running for local office. Instead, they've recruited more than 11,000 young activists, community leaders, students, educators, small-business owners, and thinkers to sign up to make real change in their own communities.
The latest: With the support they've received from Onward Together, Run for Something was able to endorse and support seven young candidates in the Virginia House of Delegates primary elections -- and they've now endorsed 78 amazing young people running for local office in 19 states. Plus, every candidate who meets the basic criteria qualifies for access to Run for Something's mentorship program, which connects campaign experts -- including senior staff from at least three presidential campaigns -- with first-time candidates.
The next step: Getting ready for the Virginia House of Delegates election on November 7th. Head to runforsomething.net to learn more.

Hillary Clinton's Time Magazine Interview

TIME Firsts Women Leaders: Hillary Clinton

Photograph by Luisa Dörr for TIME

‘The fight was worth it.’
It’s fair to say that being the first of any adventure or achievement does have added pressure. You want to be the first to open the door to others, and you hope you’re not the last.
This is a necessary conversation to be having. I wrote a whole chapter in my upcoming book about being a woman in politics because I wanted people, particularly young women and men, to have some sense of what it is like to break through barriers. I tried to put in context what my life was like before I ever stood on the stage in Philadelphia to accept the nomination of the Democratic Party. My husband had a powerful story to tell about his upbringing and his background, and Barack Obama had a unique and powerful story to tell. Few people would find my story quite so compelling or dazzling because I came of age as a young woman in the middle of the country in the middle of the last century. But I think my story, like the stories of so many women of my time, is as inspiring as any other—and it really is the story of a revolution. I came of age at a time when things were starting to change dramatically for women. It’s an important piece of our history that needs to be retold and understood so that the young men and women coming behind us understand that the movement toward women’s equality is just as urgent and vital as ever.

Hillary Clinton is adding at least one late-night stop to her upcoming media tour.
The former Secretary of State and Democratic presidential candidate will appear on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Sept. 19, it was announced Thursday.
This marks her first late-night visit since she was defeated by Donald Trump in the Nov. 2016 presidential election and just her second appearance on Late Show since Colbert succeeded Letterman as host. She previously appeared in October 2015.

Former Presidents Launch "One America Appeal"

FORMER U.S. PRESIDENTS LAUNCH "ONE AMERICA APPEAL” TO HELP HURRICANE VICTIMS
Appeal initially planned to raise funds for organizations helping Hurricane Harvey victims;
will be expanded to also help those affected by Hurricane Irma

All five living former American presidents have joined together to issue the “One America Appeal” to ask their fellow citizens and friends around the world to support the staggering recovery needs from Hurricane Harvey. As the nation carefully watches the advance of Hurricane Irma, the presidents stand ready to expand their appeal to help those affected by that storm.

The appeal will launch with the PSA “Our Friends in Texas,” which airs tonight on the NFL’s regular season opening game on NBC, and will continue with additional support and promotion from the NFL. A second PSA that addresses both hurricanes will launch over the weekend. A website for online donations is now live at OneAmericaAppeal.org.

The former presidents were inspired to come together to lend their support to the people and communities affected and to the first responders, organizations, volunteers and neighbors who have been providing assistance to victims of Hurricane Harvey. Harvey has already displaced more than one million people and caused an estimated $180 billion in damages over its 300-mile path of destruction.

A special restricted account has been established through the George H. W. Bush Presidential Library Foundation to collect and quickly distribute donations to ensure 100 cents out of every dollar goes to assist hurricane victims. Donations are tax deductible. Funds designated to help victims of Hurricane Harvey will be distributed to the Houston Harvey Relief Fund focusing on the greater Houston region, and the Rebuild Texas Fund assisting communities across the state.

Now, as Hurricane Irma batters other communities and is predicted to hit many more, efforts are underway to evaluate how this appeal can help those affected by that storm.

The PSA “Our Friends in Texas” can now be seen online at OneAmericaAppeal.org. Other video materials, including the second PSA, will be added in the coming days.

Philippe Reines on Playing Trump

This is absolutely a "must share." Philippe tends to stay behind the scenes, but there is no doubt that in another life he could have been a contender ... for a Tony Award, an Emmy, and an Oscar! He is an entertaining writer, as well!

What I Learned From Playing Donald Trump

By PHILIPPE REINES

I lied. I bragged. I flailed my hands and arms. I wore a long red tie. Really long. I did it all.
Except take responsibility. For anything. Ever.
While some people who know me might think I'm describing myself, I’m not. I’m describing the three months last year that I was the Donald Trump stand-in for dozens of mock debates against Hillary Clinton (who was played by Hillary Clinton).
To truly become Trump, I had to immerse myself in all things Trump. I watched every clip of Trump I could get my hands on. All the primary debates, rallies, TV interviews. As I told Politico’s Annie Karni a few months ago, I got so into my role as Donald Trump that I began to lose my sense of where my tie ended and he began.

Heads Up! Hillary Clinton's Sunday Morning Interview and Appearnace on The View

Set your alarm clock!  Set your DVR! With Hillary's book set to debut in just days, she is about to launch a series of TV appearances starting with an interview with Jane Pauley on CBS's Sunday Morning. Check your local listings.

hillary clinton jane pauley

With a new book to promote, Hillary Clinton is preparing to re-enter the public eye. Her first stop: a sit-down with Jane Pauley on "CBS Sunday Morning" this coming weekend.

It will be Clinton's first television interview since the 2016 presidential campaign, and the first interview about her memoir, "What Happened," a retrospective on her failed White House bid that will officially hit shelves next week.
For Pauley and CBS, the booking is a coup. Clinton has mostly kept a low profile since her stunning loss to Donald Trump last year. She's been photographed on walks through the woods and in other random locations, but her interactions with the media have been limited.
Clinton did give an interview to New York Magazine in May in which she called the election night loss to Trump "a crushing, devastating blow."

Statement from President Bill Clinton on DACA

Statement from President Bill Clinton
DACA has brought hundreds of thousands of young people out of the shadows – allowing them to live without fear, go to school, work, and contribute to America in countless other ways. These young people's dreams are part of the American Dream. And they make it more real for all of us. Today’s decision by the White House to terminate DACA – and that is effectively what it attempts to do –  will crush their dreams and weaken the American Dream for the rest of us.
It’s wrong because it’s bad policy that solves no pressing problem and raises new ones. It’s wrong because it’s irresponsible, passing the buck instead of offering sensible solutions for immigration reform. Most of all, it’s wrong because it’s cruel to send these young people to places many of them have never lived and do not know. For them this is home. The United States is their home.
Instead of punishing them, we should find ways to openly embrace them and to empower them to make their own contributions, as previous generations of immigrants have done.
Congress should act immediately to protect their status and pave the way for their future and America's future.

Question

The question is: How do you argue with people who argue like this? It's like a fire that spreads very quickly.

Hillary Clinton Endorses Verrit and Backs Dreamers

Hillary signed up for Verrit. Will you join her?

Introducing Verrit: Media for the 65.8 Million

65,853,516 Americans voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016, giving her a decisive popular vote victory over Donald Trump. Clinton’s voters came from all backgrounds and political persuasions; some supported other candidates in the primaries; but all had common interests and aspirations, among them a repudiation of what Trump’s campaign stood for.
The Clinton coalition remains strong and engaged. #StillWithHer is a widely-used hashtag that reflects a mindset and a mission: to fight for a future where love trumps hate, dignity overcomes division, equality and justice defeat extremism and bigotry.

The speculation about what happened on Nov. 8, 2016 and the months preceding that day have reached a fever pitch in recent months. Book after book has hit the market, each with its own theory about why Hillary Clinton lost and why Donald Trump won. Next month, Clinton will get a chance to tell her truth in her highly-anticipated post-election memoir, What Happened. For the first time, Clinton will allow readers a behind-the-scenes look at what it was actually like to be the first woman nominated for president by a major party, and how she weathered an election rocked by sexism and spectacle.
