At approximately 10:30 a.m. on July 19, 2012, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and World Bank President Jim Yong Kim will deliver remarks at the beginning of “Evidence and Impact: Closing the Gender Data Gap,” a one-day conference co-hosted by the Department of State and Gallup. Gallup Chairman and CEO Jim Clifton, State Department Counselor and Chief of Staff Cheryl Mills, and U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues Melanne Verveer will also deliver remarks.
David Brooks of The New York Times and Gayle Tzemach Lemmon of the Council on Foreign Relations will moderate panel discussions on "Gender Data: What We Know, What We Don't, and Why It Matters” following the opening remarks. Panelists include U.S. Ambassador Donald Steinberg, Deputy Administrator, USAID; Johannes Jütting, Manager, PARIS21 Secretariat; Robert Kirkpatrick, Director, UN Global Pulse; Anne-Marie Slaughter, Professor, Princeton University; and Jon Clifton, Partner, Gallup Government.

An emerging body of evidence shows that investing in opportunities for women and girls can yield national security, economic, and health benefits for all. While progress has been made in closing the gender data gap, much work remains. More and better data are needed to measure and accelerate impact on the lives of women and girls and, in turn, families, communities, and societies. The purpose of the conference is to increase the production and use of gender-sensitive data to create better policies and outcomes for women and girls, and thus entire economies and societies.
Presenters and panelists will discuss existing and emerging data sources and remaining gaps, and identify concrete steps that can be taken to ensure that more and better gender-sensitive data are produced and used.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will address the opening plenary session at the 19th International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2012), on Monday, July 23, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at the Washington Convention Center, Session Room 1.
The International AIDS Conference is the biennial gathering of AIDS scientists, international policymakers, implementers and people living with AIDS from around the world. AIDS 2012 will take place July 22 - 27 in Washington, D.C. The return of the conference to the U.S. after 22 years is the result of the U.S. government’s elimination of HIV-related entry restrictions.
Secretary Clinton’s remarks will be streamed live at www.kff.org/aids2012. Additional State Department officials will also participate in AIDS 2012 and related events, including Deputy Secretary of State Thomas Nides, who will speak at The Global Fund: The Next 5 Years on Thursday, July 26 at 4:30 p.m. Ambassador Melanne Verveer of the Secretary’s Office of Global Women’s Issues and Executive Director of the Secretary’s Global Health Initiative Lois Quam will speak at an event on Turning the Tide for Women at the Museum of Women in the Arts on Wednesday, July 25 at 6:30 p.m.
U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator Ambassador Eric Goosby, who leads the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) will participate in a variety of sessions throughout the conference. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton announces the launch of Walk A Mile – a global, online ACTIVation platform that will promote fitness and tolerance, inspired by the 2012 Hours Against Hate campaign and the 2012 London Olympic Games.
Initiated by the Department of State’s Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism Hannah Rosenthal and Special Representative to Muslim Communities Farah Pandith, 2012 Hours Against Hate is a campaign to stop bigotry and promote pluralism and respect across lines of culture, religion, tradition, class, disability, and gender. Using social media, the initiative asks young people to pledge an hour or more of their time to help someone who does not look, live, or pray like them. 2012 Hours Against Hate highlights Secretary Clinton’s commitment to the potential of young people to change the world.
“More and more, I see communities and people turning their backs on old boundaries and barriers and finding new ways to bridge divides. That’s the idea behind the 2012 Hours Against Hate campaign,” said Clinton.
The campaign was adopted by the London Olympic Committee as one of its “Inspired Programme” tolerance campaigns for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and was also given special recognition by the International Olympic Truce Committee.
The Olympic partnership has the singular power to motivate people in every corner of the world. Inspired by the saying ‘Don’t judge someone until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes,’ 2012 Hours Against Hate –Walk A Mile activates a global audience to affect change by using technology as a tool for community engagement. Powered by SoFit Mobile’s interactive smartphone application, Walk A Mile allows people to support global tolerance, be a part of the Olympic spirit, and take action in their communities. Participants virtually partner with people in different cities and countries and pledge to walk miles together to stop hate.
Additionally, Transcendental Music and Rock-It Media have teamed up with the 2012 Hours Against Hate –Walk A Mile campaign to engage musicians, celebrities, artists, and leaders. Musician Dave Stewart will release the campaign’s theme song Man To Man, Woman To Woman, a duet with Jihae, on July 24 at a concert at London’s Hospital Club. KT Tunstall, MOBY, Mike Scott & The Waterboys, and additional surprise guests will also perform. The concert will be available via live stream to all who download the Walk A Mile app.
