If the 2016 presidential election were today, Iowa voters back former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton over Republican Senators Marco Rubio of Florida or Rand Paul of Kentucky, but Vice President Joseph Biden trails Rand and ties Rubio in the Hawkeye State, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.
In an early look at the 2016 White House race, Ms. Clinton would defeat Sen. Rubio of Florida 48 - 37 percent. In a race against Sen. Paul of Kentucky, she would have a very small 46 - 42 percent margin.

"The major difference between former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Vice President Joseph Biden is that she runs much better among independent voters, although Sen. Rand Paul runs better among that key group than either Democrat," said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

Congratulations to Victoria Nuland!
When PJ Crowley stepped aside as State Department spokesperson two
years ago, Victoria Nuland assumed that post. As such, her words
frequently occupied these pages. Toria, as she is called, was the DOS
officer who expressed her department's concerns and advice regarding the
talking points issued after the 9/11/12 attacks on U.S. outposts in
Benghazi, Libya. She was also the person who painstakingly informed the
press on a daily basis of progress of the ARB investigation and the
department's cooperation with Congress and agencies in the days, weeks,
and months following those attacks.
Toria is a career Foreign Service officer. As such, she has worked under a variety of administrations. While serving as DOS spokesperson, she demonstrated a singular loyalty to Hillary Clinton, the kind we might expect to see from staff Hillary brought to DOS from the Senate. Especially toward the end of Hillary's tenure, when she was ill and working from home, Toria was the guard dog against intrusiveness from the press on personal issues of health.
So it is with a great deal of pleasure that we see Toria receive this nomination today. She has served well all of her professional life and well deserves ascension to this post.

Obama nominates Nuland for assistant secretary of state
President Obama on Thursday nominated Victoria Nuland, a State Department official involved in the editing of the administration's talking points on Benghazi, to be the next assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs.
Nuland, a career foreign service officer who was until recently State's top spokesperson, had long been expected to be nominated the post to replace Philip Gordon, who Obama picked to serve as Middle East coordinator for the National Security Council.

For the Clintons the Political Minefield is Local
In 2010 and 2012, Bill Clinton, as surrogate for Hillary, campaigned
for Democrats who supported her in 2008 while she, as secretary of state
was unable to participate in politics. Newly freed of that status,
however, Hillary Clinton's is the endorsement many would love to claim.
In California a few weeks ago to pick up an award, Bill Clinton
endorsed and did a bit of campaigning for Los Angeles mayoral candidate
Wendy Greuel, a Clinton Dem who is running against Obama Dem Eric Garcetti, while neatly excusing Hillary from stepping into the fray.
If friends on the other coast are benefiting from Clinton charisma, those in New York, with whom an exhausted Senator Clinton expected to reacquaint herself following her 2008 presidential primary and subsequent campaign for the Obama-Biden ticket, will not be receiving any Clinton endorsements during the mayoral primary in New York City.
With Anthony Weiner's expected entry into the mayoral campaign possibly today via a video shot on his childhood front stoop with his wife Huma at his side, both Clintons have declined making NYC endorsements citing too many friends in the race.

The Clintons will keep mum in the Democratic primary for mayor.
Former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have personal histories with several contenders in the packed race.
But their tandem statements come as Anthony Weiner, husband of longtime Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin, is widely expected to go to the videotape in launching a redemptive comeback.
"President Clinton has too many friends in this race who have been good to him and his family," spokesman Matt McKenna told the Daily News. "He wishes them all well, but won't be getting involved."
Nick Merrill, a spokesman for the former First Lady and senator, similarly said "Secretary Clinton knows all of the candidates, she has worked with many of them, and is close with many of them, so won't be weighing in one way or the other."

Vile Threats Against Hillary Clinton by Talk Show Host Attract Secret Service Attention
The Still 4 Hillers here have made it clear in words and actions that
we do not tolerate attacks against Hillary Clinton or theft of her
identity in social media. When an attack as vicious and vile as a
recent rant by radio personality Pete Santilli occurs, however, it goes
beyond Hillary's loyalists to defend her, and we look to the
authorities. Thanks to TPM (and Bea for finding this) we now know that the Secret Service is aware of Santilli's repugnant and threatening remarks.

Secret Service Looking Into Radio Host’s Graphic Violent Comments About Obama, Hillary Clinton
The Secret Service is following up on recent comments by right wing radio host Pete Santilli, who claimed to want to shoot former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in the vagina and see President Obama tried and shot for treason.
“We are aware of Mr. Santilli’s comments and will take the appropriate follow up action,” Edwin M. Donovan, a Secret Service spokesperson, told TPM on Monday. “He certainly has a right to free speech, but the Secret Service has a right and an obligation to determine what a person’s intent is when making comments like this.”
He made the threatening comments the week before last on his eponymous Internet based radio program. Santilli is a fringe figure who has made threatening comments on his program in the past. But he’s gained some quasi-mainstream attention recently with guests like Ted Nugent and Gun Owners of America director Larry Pratt.

Parting Act: Hillary Clinton Left Obama a Roadmap Out of Gitmo
Upcoming on Barack Obama's agenda is a major speech that, at least in
part, will address the roadblock out of Guantanamo. With a hunger
strike and force-feedings going on, retention of prisoners there has
again risen to the radar of public attention, and civil rights activists
are refueled.
In Daniel Klaidman's Newsweek article we learn that the master breaker of roadblocks, Hillary Clinton, in one of her final acts as secretary of state, drafted a detailed memo to the president asking him to resume the effort to close Gitmo and providing him with specific suggestions as to how objectives could be met.
None of this will come as any surprise to Hillary's loyalists who have always known that she is a woman of practical answers, loyal to the administration, and would never hesitate to share what she thinks might be helpful. In the end, this is a humanitarian issue, and, of course, Hillary would pitch in with any assistance she thought might be helpful. That's our girl!

How Gitmo Imprisoned Obama

One recent plea, two sources told Newsweek, came from Hillary Clinton, who, just before she left office in January 2013, sent a two-page confidential memo to Obama about Guantánamo. Clinton had, during her years in the administration, occasionally jumped into the fray to push her colleagues to do more on the issue. One of those occasions was at a White House meeting of Obama’s national-security principals in August 2010. “We are throwing the president’s commitment to close Guantánamo into the trash bin,” she chastised White House aides, according to three participants in the meeting. “We are doing him a disservice by not working harder on this.”
But at the end of the day, Clinton had little leverage to get the White House to act. Now, in one of her last moves as secretary of State, she was making a final effort to prod her boss to do more. Her memo was replete with practical suggestions for moving ahead on Gitmo. Chief among them: Obama needed to appoint a high-level official to be in charge of the effort, someone who had clout and proximity to the Oval Office. Further, Clinton argued that Obama could start transferring the 86 detainees who’d already been cleared for release. (Congress has imposed onerous restrictions on the administration’s ability to transfer Gitmo detainees—including a stipulation that the secretary of Defense certify that detainees sent to other countries would not engage in acts of terrorism. In her memo, Clinton pointed out that the administration could use “national-security waivers” to circumvent the restriction.)
The Clinton missive perturbed White House aides, who viewed it as an attempt to put them on the spot, according to a senior administration official. It’s unclear how Obama himself reacted to the memo; there’s no evidence that it spurred him to action. (The White House declined to comment for this story.) But whether or not the memo played a role in changing the president’s thinking, the mere fact that Clinton felt the need to write it was noteworthy, because it suggested the degree to which Guantánamo, four years into the Obama presidency, remained an irritant for her—and for many other high-level administration officials as well.

Further, though, his frustration stems from his total disinterest in anything and everything Hillary from the moment she entered the State Department, a disinterest suddenly shattered when he and his cohorts in the media decided she must be the Dem ticket for 2016.
Had he been paying attention, he would have known that Victoria is very careful grammatically, that there is jargon spoken at the State Department, and that Toria, a career Foreign Service officer, speaks it fluently.
Hillary Clinton had already prepared herself for this language experience the day she first set foot in Foggy Bottom as SOS.
It is clear to anyone who has taken the time and pains to follow Hillary Clinton at State that Toria was referring to leadership at a level lower than the secretary who have experience with the kind of wordsmithing that was going on in these emails.

President Obama set the tone with his inaugural address. And the work of the Obama-Biden Administration is committed to advancing America's national security, furthering America's interests, and respecting and exemplifying America's values around the world. (Applause.) There are three legs to the stool of American foreign policy: defense, diplomacy, and development. And we are responsible for two of the three legs. And we will make clear, as we go forward, that diplomacy and development are essential tools in achieving the long-term objectives of the United States. And I will do all that I can, working with you, to make it abundantly clear that robust diplomacy and effective development are the best long-term tools for securing America's future. (Applause.) In my testimony before the Foreign Relations Committee, I spoke a lot about smart power. Well, at the heart of smart power are smart people, and you are those people. And you are the ones that we will count on and turn to for the advice and counsel, the expertise and experience to make good on the promises of this new Administration.I want to thank Steve for his comments that really summarized the full range of experience and expertise of both the Foreign Service and the Civil Service, and also to send my appreciation to all of the nationals around the world who work in our embassies and work with government officials. night where they were honored at the Conservation International dinner
in New York.

CI Board member Harrison Ford and former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton took the stage May 15 at Conservation International's 16th Annual New York Dinner to discuss the urgent need to preserve our natural capital.
The conversation, which ranged from illegal wildlife trade in Africa to the effects of a changing climate on the Arctic, underscored the direct connection between conservation and our economic and security interests.

Harrison's biggest fan? Hillary starstruck on stage
SHE'S married to one of the most dynamic men in the world, but Hillary Clinton was clearly taken with Hollywood star Harrison Ford at an event.
The former US Secretary of State (65) couldn't hide her smile as she listened to the acting legend (71) give a talk at a Conservation International dinner in The Plaza Hotel, New York, last night.
