Secretary Clinton literally hit the tarmac rolling in April putting
wheels down in Istanbul on the first. She spent the day meeting with
officials and representatives of the Syrian opposition and was wheels up
again for home.
The very next morning, back in D.C. she attended
a North American Leaders' Summit at the White House and hosted a
luncheon for the foreign ministers at the State Department. The next day
it was off to Virginia to accept VMI's Distinguished Diplomat Award and
to visit NATO headquarters in Norfolk.
Toward the end of the
first week her rock star personna emerged in the glossies with
discussions of scrunchies and the explosion of the Hillary-meme "Texts'
from Hillary." The next week she hosted the 2012 G8 Foreign Ministers
Meeting, delivered the Forrestal Lecture at the U.S. Naval Academy,
participated in the U.S./Brazil Partnership for the 21st Century, and
previewed a film about Aung San Suu Kyi. She welcomed the Japanese
foreign minister as well as Adam Smith and Stacy Lambe - originators of
"Texts from Hillary" - to the State Department, exchanged hockey jerseys
with Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird and participated in the White
House Conference on Connecting the Americas. Then she was off to
Colombia, Brazil, and Belgium
In Cartagena, she spoke to civil
society at the Summit of the Americas, launched the “Connect 2022″
Initiative at a CEO Summit, and danced at a nightclub named Havana. Then
it was on to Brasilia where she met with business leaders, participated
in the Open Government Partnership, and conferred with her Brazilian
counterpart Antonio de Aguiar Patriota who honored her at a dinner. Then
she was wheels up for the long trip to Brussels.
Late in the
month, Mme. Secretary was once again named one of Time's "Most
Influential." In Brussels, accompanied by Defense Secretary Panetta, she
attended the Ad Hoc Minsterial on Syria and was asked about 2016 (which
Panetta supported full-throatedly). By the 23rd she was home and headed
for Syracuse University where she engaged in a policy conversation with
Maxwell School Dean James Steinberg.
Back
in D.C. it was more bilaterals with the foreign ministers Carr of
Australia and Martinez of El Salvador and a little hop to NYC to appear
at Lincoln Center to speak at the Time 100 Gala. Then she hopped right
back to D.C. where she met with Albanian PM Sali Berisha, celebrated
Poland's National Day, and picked up the Woodrow Wilson Award.
As
April drew to a close she delivered remarks at the Global Impact
Economy Forum, commemorated the Holocaust, kicked-off the Seventh Annual
Fortune/U.S. State Department Global Women’s Mentoring Partnership,
participated with Secretary Panetta in a 2+2 ministerial with Philippine
FM Albert del Rosario and DM Voltaire Gazmin, and honored Japanese PM
Noda at a dinner.
