Haiti: One Year Later

While we are waiting for news of the Secretary's trip to the Persian Gulf, the major networks and cable news sources have sent their anchors packing back to Haiti to cover conditions a year after the earthquake that devastated that country. The anniversary of that event is coming up on Wednesday, and we all have heard criticisms of the flow of aid. The State Department held a briefing on Friday with Cheryl Mills and Rajiv Shah, USAID Administrator, both of whom can be considered the two U.S.-based officials most familiar with our operations there.

In addition, the Department has issued Fast Fact Sheets regarding operations in Haiti as follows.

Finally, this event will be live-streamed in Dipnote tomorrow.

Haiti Special Coordinator Thomas Adams and President and CEO of InterAction Sam Worthington will discuss the continued U.S. support to the Haitian Government and people in response to the January 2010 earthquake and the way forward in the coming year on Monday, January 10, 2011 at 10:30 am (EST).

This discussion, moderated by Assistant Secretary of State Philip J. Crowley, will be streamed live on DipNote, the Department of State’s official blog. Members of the general public will have the opportunity to participate through the submission of questions, some of which will be selected for response during the live broadcast.

This is the eighth in the Conversations with America video series coordinated by the Bureau of Public Affairs, in which the State Department's senior leadership hold monthly conversations live, online, with leaders of prominent non-governmental organizations. Discussion topics include foreign policy and global issues, and provide a candid view of how leaders from civil society engage the Department on pressing foreign policy issues.
