Petition to Senator Schumer and the DNC: Respect Hillary's Legacy!

There was some discussion over the weekend regarding remarks Chuck Schumer made last week. One reason I did not bring that up was that last we were also in the middle of a battle royal to preserve the ACA, and Senator Schumer was central to the effort to shepherd every Democratic vote - which he successfully did. In that context, I made a judgment call and decided not to distract from the important votes taking place in the Senate. Some readers disagreed with me, but from my point of view, an angry rant from me probably would not have accomplished anything positive and could have distracted from the important work in the Senate last week.

Sometimes hesitation reaps rewards. Skilled teachers and actors know the value of a well-placed pause. While those are planned, this one turned out to be serendipitous. Also over the weekend, a petition popped up on Hillary Clinton Express that can accomplish far more than a rant from me. D Michael Sawyer posted this.
Hillary friends!
I'm asking for your support for this petition. It was developed by a friend who lead the effort in Knoxville. I helped draft some of the language here, particularly focusing on future candidates and 2018. It addresses schumer's comments concerning hillary spoken last weekend. My friend who wrote this was a strong supporter for hillary in 08 and worked hard for her in 16, and we are all concerned what this attack on her will mean for both our democracy because we are signaling to to Republicans we will tolerate more investigations into her and to democratic women we are leaving a legacy of sexism. Please join us.
I think you will all agree that this petition is much more productive than any sputtering rant I might have posted, and the targets are Senator Schumer and the DNC.  They are looking for 500 signatures. Perhaps we can help them get even more!
Petitioning Senator Charles Schumer and 1 other

Tell Democratic Party leaders they must respect Hillary's legacy!

In a recent interview with the Washington Post, Democratic Senate Leader Chuck Schumer chided Hillary Clinton for the loss to Trump in last year’s presidential election: “When you lose to somebody who has 40 percent popularity, you don’t blame other things – Comey, Russia – you blame yourself”. Sen. Schumer’s comments are coded sexism at its worst, part of a disturbing trend of disrespect toward Hillary taking hold in the Democratic Party leadership. Hillary’s campaign inspired millions of women to stand up, take power, and believe in their own potential. Most of the Democratic rank-and-file still support her. Hillary's loss to someone as offensive as Trump proved that sexism is still alive and kicking. Instead of denouncing this injustice, Schumer wants Hillary to shut up, get lost, and blame herself for the discrimination and election interference that undermined her. As the highest-ranking leader of the Democratic Party in government, Sen. Schumer owes Hillary and the party more respect! Tearing down Hillary Clinton as a foundation for Democrats’ 2018 message supports and perpetuates sexism in the party and the nation and potentially undermines future campaigns of Democratic women. It offends the majority of Democrats who are still with her. Hillary did have an affirmative message, despite Schumer’s claims to the contrary. Most Democrats, women and men, still believe that we are “Stronger Together”. Schumer must reaffirm this message of unity by reversing his position on the reason for the Democrat’s loss. Sign this petition demanding that Schumer publicly acknowledge the historic importance of Hillary’s campaign and admit that un-examined sexism robbed her of victory.
This petition will be delivered to:

Shock and Awe: "American Heroes Week"

When the POTUS is scheduled to speak to the Boy Scout Jamboree during the week his own administration has designated "American Heroes Week," you would expect an inspiring speech citing a variety of patriotic historical figures and lessons young people can draw from their examples. It did not go that way. Instead Donald Trump used raw language, talked about yacht parties, and encouraged his teenaged audience to boo Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.  Most found it unseemly. Many were shocked. That was how the week began.

 Then there was shock #2.

Some way to celebrate American heroes!

The blindsided Joint Chiefs and Pentagon, not to mention the rank and file, spent Wednesday and Thursday trying to untangle what those tweets were supposed to mean. Meanwhile, a great many Americans celebrated transgendered troops on the social nets. Protests are planned this weekend.

Meanwhile, on Capitol Hill, the Senate was preparing for a vote-a-rama intended by the Republicans to repeal the ACA (Affordable Care Act) also known as "Obamacare." One by one the proposed Republican "bills" were defeated. The real action began late Thursday night with a defeated Democratic motion to move the bill to committee. When the last bill came up for a vote, it was after 1 a.m. EDT. This one, known as the "skinny repeal," was simply a hollow shell.

There was high drama on the Senate floor. Pence appeared and conferred with John McCain. Observers speculated about the conversations, body language, gestures as senators milled around on the floor. Shock and awe! In the end, three courageous Republicans voted against the bad bill. The Democrats voted against it in lock step.

Image may contain: 3 people, people smiling, closeup

So thank you, John McCain, Susan Collins, and Lisa Murkowski!  Thank you also, all the Democrats who voted against this potentially harmful bill. You are American heroes! You saved health insurance for millions.

Let's be clear on this too: none of this would have happened had it not been for the grassroots. Thank you, everyone who made phone calls, went to town halls, demonstrated at the Capitol and legislators' offices, sent emails, and signed petitions. Thank you to the Resistance! American heroes!

"American Heroes Week" was full of surprises, some awesome, some shocking and confusing.

We lost a four-legged war hero this week too. See the touching story of USMC Corporal Jeff De Young and his  partner, Cena - a bomb sniffing dog.

Hillary Clinton's Memoir: 'What Happened'

Now we know the title of Hillary Clinton's forthcoming memoir about the 2016 election.

Hillary Clinton Is Writing Campaign Memoir Called ‘What Happened’

Former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has announced the title of her forthcoming memoir on the 2016 campaign: What Happened. The book will be released Sept. 12, according to Simon & Schuster’s website. “In the past, for reasons I try to explain, I’ve often felt I had to be careful in public, like I was up on a wire without a net,” Clinton writes in the introduction. “Now I’m letting my guard down.”

“In the past, for reasons I try to explain, I’ve often felt I had to be careful in public, like I was up on a wire without a net. Now I’m letting my guard down.” —Hillary Rodham Clinton, from the introduction of What Happened
For the first time, Hillary Rodham Clinton reveals what she was thinking and feeling during one of the most controversial and unpredictable presidential elections in history. So Ends "Made in America Week"

It has been just another Friday in Trump's America. During a week supposedly dedicated to jobs for Americans, the Trump organization applied for H2B visas for cooks, housekeepers, and servers.  Presumably there are no Americans whatsoever who qualify for these positions.
On Thursday, the Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida, said it wanted to hire 15 housekeepers for $10.33 an hour; 20 cooks for $13.34 an hour; and 35 servers for $11.88 an hour. The Trump National Golf Club in Jupiter, Florida, was asking for six cooks to hire for $13.34 per hour. These requests are published in a database updated by the Department of Labor.
Social media this week was peppered with photos of Trump goods with "made in" tags from everywhere but here.

Two rogue waves crashed on the National Mall Friday.  Anthony Scaramucci, allegedly a close Trump friend, was named Director of White House Communications. In close succession, Sean Spicer, who has been doing that job while Sarah Huckabee Sanders filled in for him in the press room, abruptly resigned. So there's that.

Well you can just imagine how conveniently all of this drama played into the week's theme! All agendas on cable news were thrown into chaos as all awaited a live, on camera press briefing, something once routine and, after six months of Trump, a phenomenon. Filling time with screens split between studios and the press room the topic was the new director. If you wonder why I used the word allegedly" above, it is because, for all the hype about what a "Trump guy" he is, the Daily Beast ran these stories.

President Trump’s new communications director, Anthony Scaramucci, once called his new boss a “hack politician” engaging in “anti-American” rhetoric. In August 2015, then-candidate Trump railed against “hedge-fund guys paying nothing” in taxes. During an appearance on the Fox Business Network that same day, Scaramucci, lamented how “another hack politician,” whose remarks “anti-American and divisive.” Scaramucci additionally quipped: “I’ll tell you who he’s going to be president of—you can tell Donald I said this—the Queens County Bullies Association.”

Anthony Scaramucci deleted tweets in which he previously criticized Donald Trump hours after accepting his new job as White House communications director on Friday.
Scaramucci also previously expressed support for his boss's old rivals, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama—even donating money to their campaigns.

Ahhhhh! You knew something here was going to come around to Hillary, didn't you?  Well that's not all!

President Trump was 20 words into his recent interview with the New York Times when he raised a topic that he seemingly can’t resist: Hillary Clinton.“Hi fellas, how you doing?” he said to the three Times reporters, two of whom were fellas. Then, asked about his meeting on health care with Republican senators, he continued. “It was good. We are very close. It’s a tough — you know, health care. Look, Hillary Clinton worked eight years in the White House with her husband as president and having majorities and couldn’t get it done. Smart people, tough people — couldn’t get it done.”
SNIP
In 17 of 19 of his interviews, Clinton came up, on average about 36 percent of the way in. That’s more frequently and earlier than his mentions of Obama, who made it into only 16 interviews, about 43 percent of the way in.

So if you were wondering why Hillary's name keeps coming up in the news - there you go! Trump cannot stop talking or tweeting about her.

To wrap up "Made in America Week" then, and I hesitate as there are more than two hours to go until midnight EDT on the east coast, Carrier began cutting jobs this week. How's all that winning going?

The Defense Rests. Brian Fallon: "She is never running for office again."

Time to get off that treadmill and onto the mid-term train.

Brian Fallon, a spokesman for Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign, rebuked Fox News for its recent aggressive coverage of the former Democratic nominee, especially because he says she won't run for office again.
"Fox is resorting to dredging up the ghost of Hillary Clinton, who is never running for office again," Fallon told CNNMoney on Thursday

Clinton has been a dominant focus of Fox News coverage this week.
If you have any argument at all with this definitive statement, stop calling yourself a Hillary Clinton ... whatever you call yourself.  A primary reason Hillary's supporters are loyal to her is because she is a woman of her word. When she says she is going to do something, she does it. When she says she will not, she won't. If you have any argument with her own statement that she will not run, you are calling her a liar. You are not a faithful, loyal Hillary Clinton supporter. You are siding with those who call her deceptive, untrustworthy, unreliable.

The defense rests!

This goes out with hearts and flowers to the supposed Hillary supporters calling me vile names on Facebook for telling the truth that they are unwilling to accept.

“Camps are part of the fabric of our national life. They are often safe havens in the storms that blow across everyone's life and seem particularly difficult for children and teenagers, places where people can get back to basics and remember, or learn for the first time, what's really important. Our families today come in all sizes and shapes, but they all want the same thing: a good job, safety and security, the chance to build a better life for themselves and their kids. Camps are one of the essential building blocks for so many people.” -Hillary Clinton, during a speech to the American Camp Association, March 19, 2015
Camp Olmsted is located in Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York, and has been serving children from New York City’s neighborhoods for more than 110 years. Our program serves boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 14 and often provides their first outdoor camping experience. During our program campers enjoy swimming, hiking, sports, art, reading, and ropes challenge course activities. They also get to express themselves through performances and creative writing. Setting the Record Straight on the 17 Intel Agencies

Just to keep the record straight, here are the 17 intel agencies that we have been hearing about since Hillary Clinton brought them up during one of the debates.

latimes.com

There's more than the CIA and FBI: The 17 agencies that make up the U.S. intelligence community

Nina Agrawal

The U.S. intelligence community recently reaffirmed its conclusion that senior officials in Russia were behind hacks during the 2016 presidential campaign into the Democratic National Committee and emails belonging to associates of Hillary Clinton.
But what exactly is the “intelligence community?” It’s not just an amorphous term for all U.S. intelligence officials. It’s a veritable alphabet soup of 17 agencies and offices. The group includes agencies strictly focused on intelligence as well as the intelligence arms of other government agencies and of the military. Its total budget in 2015 was $66.8 billion.
Here are the 17 offices:

Trump Misleads on Russian Meddling: Why 17 Intelligence Agencies Don’t Need to Agree

By MATTHEW ROSENBERG
President Trump said on Thursday that only “three or four” of the United States’ 17 intelligence agencies had concluded that Russia interfered in the presidential election — a statement that while technically accurate, is misleading and suggests widespread dissent among American intelligence agencies when none has emerged.
The “three or four” agencies referred to by Mr. Trump are the Central Intelligence Agency, the National Security Agency, the F.B.I. and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, all of which determined that Russia interfered in the election. Their work was compiled into a report, and a declassified version was released on Jan. 6 by the director of national intelligence. It said that all four agencies had “high confidence” that Russian spies had tried to interfere in the election on the orders of President Vladimir V. Putin.
The reason the views of only those four intelligence agencies, not all 17, were included in the assessment is simple: They were the ones tracking and analyzing the Russian campaign. The rest were doing other work.

President Hillary Clinton: Boring? Maybe, but also Linear and Productive

Hillary Clinton is a workhorse, not a show pony. Her nose-to-the-grindstone style is well-known. That's what we voted for! Yes, it would have been boring ... and productive. Hypotheticals are not productive. Woulda, shoulda, coulda gets us nowhere. The irony is that having brought the three-ring circus to town, the Trump team persists in its contention that all the mindless activity represents movement in some direction while it is only a variety of acts going in circles.

Yes, as POTUS, Hillary would have been boring, wonky, policy-oriented. What I loved from the getgo about Hillary is that she is linear. She would have lectured us on the details and explained the data. She is intersectional. We would have learned stuff and would have learned how stuff interrelates. We always do when Hillary speaks. We would have moved forward. I would have taken that in a New York minute rather than what we have now: a clown car, show ponies, and twisty acrobats all performing simultaneously under a dark big top. I always hated the circus because who could keep track of all that?

In recent years, there has been an interesting trend in international relations research: a renewed focus on the role that individual leaders play in foreign policy outcomes. This runs counter to traditional international relations scholarship, which argues that the system imposes powerful structural constraints on individual leader behavior. Over the past decade, however, an increasing number of scholars have focused on the first image, suggesting multiple ways in which individual foreign policy leaders affect their country’s approach to international relations.Donald Trump’s electoral college victory in November has accelerated this research even further. At a minimum, he has sounded different from, say, a garden-variety Republican on a number of fronts. But if Hillary Clinton had won 100,000 more votes in the salient states, would things be all that different? This kind of counterfactual analysis is also a crucial part of political science and foreign policy analysis.Read more >>>>

Jennifer Palmieri Reflects on Trying to Shine a Light on Russia

I am not big on post mortems.  Living through that 2015 - 2016 campaign season was painful enough one time around. In her Candidate Confessional podcast for HuffPo, Jennifer Palmieri, communications director for Hillary for America,  revisits the difficulty she encountered trying to get the press to buy into the seriousness of the Russian meddling. There is a lesson here, especially for the press.

The most ignored story of the 2016 presidential campaign is the press corps’ unwillingness to focus on Russia’s election meddling before election night, according to one of Hillary Clinton’s former top aides.
After all, the circumstances that led to the accusations of collusion that continue to dog President Donald Trump were visible during the campaign itself. The same Trump associates who are currently being questioned for potential ties to the Kremlin had senior positions on his election team.
But to the eternal frustration of Clinton’s camp, the press never seemed interested in the Russian-meddling angle during the campaign.
In the latest episode of “Candidate Confessional,” Jennifer Palmieri, Clinton’s campaign communications director, recounts how she tried to repeatedly get reporters to write about Russia, to little effect.

Hillary Clinton’s campaign team was frustrated the press wouldn’t focus on potential Russian meddling in the election until after Election Day.

Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Inspire the Arts

To the devastation of many, especially little girls, the confetti that was installed at the ceiling of the Javits Center in Manhattan never fell on the night of November 8, 2016.  Artist Bunny Burson, who served as executive director of the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities in President Bill Clinton's administration and as part of Hillary Clinton’s Missouri Steering Committee, has tracked down that confetti and turned it into inspirational art.

Early on election night last November, artist Bunny Burson looked to New York City’s Javits Center ceiling, expecting confetti to fall to celebrate Hillary Clinton becoming the nation's first woman president. But the confetti never fell.
Crushed by Clinton’s loss to President Donald Trump, Burson began an almost two-week journey to track down the confetti, which she thought would make great material for artwork.
She used the confetti to turn a window at Bruno David Gallery in Clayton into a massive snow globe titled “And Still I Rise.” Her purpose? To flip Clinton’s defeat into inspiration for women and girls.
It is no secret that until the summer of  2015, Chelsea Clinton and Ivanka Trump were friends. They are no longer so close. Actress and playwright, Melissa Rauch put her imagination to work on what it might have been like when Chelsea and Ivanka did lunch. The result is a two-character satirical play that will run for one night only to benefit Planned Parenthood.  Zosia Mamet will join Rauch for what is sure to be the hottest ticket in town this summer.

Zosia Mamet & Melissa Rauch To Play Chelsea Clinton & Ivanka Trump

We've seen a lot of satirical takes on the families of both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton since the election madness went into full force in 2016, but nothing has quite excited us like this latest parody announcement.
Zosia Mamet and Melissa Rauch are teaming up to put on a comedic event in New York City where they'll assume the roles of Ivanka Trump and Chelsea Clinton, respectively, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The event, titled The Secret Lunches of Chelsea & Ivanka, will be held for one night only at Joe's Pub on July 24 and will directly benefit Planned Parenthood. Because the only thing better than watching badass babes performing together is knowing that the event helps to provide millions of women with access to reproductive health services.

If you know Mamet's gift for comedic deadpan, you will not want to miss this!

Hillary Clinton Back at Work

We hope she had a lovely, long holiday weekend with her grandkids and dogs. Hillary was back on Twitter today addressing the GOP Senators. She responded to a tweet from the GOP.

That's our girl!  She never cares about getting the credit for the work. She just cares that the work gets done.  She sent them, many are her former colleagues in the Senate,  her health care plan from her campaign website. If she were still in the Senate, she would be encouraging them to work cooperatively with her on this.  Since she is not, she presented them with her plan for their use. Well done, Hillary! Thank you.  We hope they accept your offering in kind and save health care for Americans.

World leaders bid farewell to 'patriot' Helmut Kohl

The former German chancellor was remembered as both a German and European patriot, who paved the way to a united Europe.
UK, Saturday 01 July 2017

Helmut Kohl is considered one of the great architects of the European Union
Past and present world leaders have bid farewell to Helmut Kohl, the German chancellor who helped unite Europe.
Mr Kohl, who died aged 87 on 16 June, was remembered as both a German and European patriot, who deserved "a place of honour in the European pantheon".
The former chancellor becomes the first person to be honoured with an official memorial event by the European Union in the French city of Strasbourg.

Among the many dignitaries present at the memorial was former US president Bill Clinton, who thanked Kohl for giving "us the chance to be involved in something bigger than ourselves".
"Bigger than our terms of office, bigger than our fleeting careers," he said.
"Because all of us, sooner or later, will be in a coffin like that," he added.
"And the only gift we can leave behind, is a better future for our children, and the freedom to do their own choices. Including their own mistakes."
The 70-year-old politician said his wife, Hillary Clinton, said he loved Mr Kohl "because he was the only person with a bigger appetite for food than I have".
"The 20th century in Europe really began on his watch," Mr Clinton added.
