Well, this came in today, and it is special, because, you know, of the Special Relationship, but also because our Secretary of State always says exactly the right thing. The comments about WWII are perfect! It is a lovely greeting from one lovely lady to another on our behalf, and I could not be prouder of our Secretary of State if she were my own sister (which is how I think of her, anyway).
Happy Birthday, Your Majesty, and many more!!
Birthday of Queen Elizabeth II
Hillary Rodham Clinton
Secretary of StateWashington, DCJune 4, 2010
On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I am pleased to wish Queen Elizabeth II a happy birthday and extend warm wishes to the people of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth of Nations. On this celebratory occasion, we pay tribute to the Queen’s life and legacy and honor the special relationship between our two nations.
The United States and Britain have together championed the cause of peace, freedom, and global prosperity for decades. This year we commemorate the 65th anniversary of the end of World War II, when our two countries, along with our other allies, joined together to defeat Fascism and tyranny. The young princess Elizabeth helped rally her nation in the darkest days of that war, and she has remained a beacon of integrity and resolve ever since. The United States has always been grateful for her friendship and example.
Today our special relationship continues to provide a solid foundation as the United States and Britain work side by side to meet the challenges of the 21st century, from supporting the refocused mission in Afghanistan to promoting the global economic recovery to working for peace in the Middle East.
Once again, I wish Queen Elizabeth II a very happy birthday and peace and prosperity for the people of the United Kingdom in the year to come.
