Remarks with Dominican Republic President Leonel Fernandez Before Their Meeting
Hillary Rodham Clinton
Secretary of StateWashington, DC
July 13, 2010SECRETARY CLINTON: Well, it is wonderful to welcome President Fernandez here to the State Department. I was privileged to be in the Oval Office yesterday when the president met with the President. And it was an excellent meeting and I look forward to following through today on the many issues that were discussed. But again, Mr. President, we’re so pleased you’re here.
PRESIDENT FERNANDEZ: Thank you. Thank you. And I would also like to state that for me, it was an honor, a great honor to have this meeting yesterday with President Obama, and we shared some thoughts about the situation in the region, and specifically about the relationship between the Dominican Republic and the U.S.
And if you allow me now, Madam Secretary, I will shift into Spanish, since yesterday I was not able to really speak in our official language.
(Translated from Spanish) I would like to say that for us, it is a great honor to have this meeting here at the Department of State with a person who is very admired in the Dominican Republic, Secretary Hillary Clinton. Yesterday, with President Obama, we discussed areas of mutual interest for the Dominican Republic and the United States as well as our region. We want to continue the discussion today with Secretary Clinton to reaffirm issues we discussed yesterday with President Obama. Many thanks.
Thank you.
SECRETARY CLINTON: Thank you all.
