Secretary Clinton to Deliver Remarks on the State of Global Food Security

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will deliver remarks on the state of global food security and food price volatility, at the invitation of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations on behalf of the United Nations Agencies in Rome. Secretary Clinton’s remarks will occur on Friday, May 6, in Rome, Italy. FAO will release its latest Food Price Index on May 5. The Secretary’s remarks will occur at approximately 10:30 a.m. (CEST) on Friday, May 6, at the FAO Headquarters in Rome: Green Room, Building A, Viale delle Terme di Caracalla 1.

Secretary Clinton will address the leadership of the United Nations Agencies and international organizations in Rome, and the Permanent Representatives to these bodies which include the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Food Programme (WFP), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the International Developmental Law Organization (IDLO), the International Centre for the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM), and the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT). The Secretary’s remarks will be followed by brief remarks from the senior representatives of the FAO, WFP, and IFAD.

In a July 2009 meeting in L’Aquila, Italy, the leaders of the G8 countries and other world leaders pledged $22 billion to reinvest in agricultural development and improved global food security.

In the United States, this pledge resulted in the creation and implementation of Feed the Future - the U.S. global hunger and food security initiative - and 1,000 Days - a global public private partnership working to improve nutrition for mothers and young children around the world. These efforts, in cooperation with the UN Food and Agriculture Agencies in Rome and other international organizations and stakeholders, have been working proactively with communities and countries to forge sustainable solutions to food insecurity.
