On behalf of President Obama and the American people, I congratulate the people of Wales as they celebrate St. David’s Day on March 1. This is an opportunity to honor the culture and history of the Welsh people and reaffirm our enduring bonds of friendship.
As an American of Welsh descent, I have always had a special place in my heart for Wales – both the beauty of its land and the determination of its people. Welsh-Americans have contributed to the culture and prosperity of the United States since our earliest days. American Presidents such as Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Calvin Coolidge traced their heritage to Wales, as did icons like Frank Lloyd-Wright and Bette Davis.
Today, the United States and Wales are united by our shared values, history, and aspirations for a brighter future for all our people. Our businesses trade together, our educators and scientists collaborate in classrooms and laboratories, and our people crisscross the Atlantic as friends and family. I know many Americans are looking forward to visiting Wales this October for the Ryder Cup competition in Newport.
So in honor of this St. David’s Day, let me offer our warmest wishes to the people of Wales.
